Soule's Slam Helps Bearcats Edge Mules in 6-5 Victory

Bolivar, Mo. – The Bearcats defeated the Mules in game one to begin the three game series. In a close game, SBU edged out UCM by a score of 6-5, improving SBU's record to 9-11 (4-6 MIAA) on the year.

Cory Dudley got the start on the mound and had an excellent outing. The Mules scored a run in the first inning, but it was unearned. In the second inning, Jackson Soule hit a one out double and moved to third on a fly out, but was unable to score. Dudley surrendered his second run in the third inning, making the score 2-0. The Bearcats roared back in their half of the third, scoring 5 runs. Brett Mitchell led off the inning with a hit by pitch, followed by a Luke Winfrey bunt for hit. Caleb Sneed then hit a single to load the bases. The 2-0 lead was cut in half thanks to a Brett Lutgen sacrifice fly, scoring Mitchell. After a second out, Blake Hobbs was hit by a pitch to load the bases once again. With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, Jackson Soule came in clutch, hitting a grand slam to right field and giving SBU a 5-2 lead.

The Bearcats continued their scoring, plating another run in the fourth. With two outs, Blake Lutgen hit a single that rolled past the right fielder, allowing him to advance all the way to third. Hunter Hisky was the next batter at the plate, driving Lutgen in to extend SBU's lead to 6-2. Dudley kept dealing, not allowing another run until the 8th inning when he was relieved for. The Bearcats got out of the 8th surrendering just one run making the score 6-3. SBU got a quick first out in the top of the 9th, but the Mules managed to score twice more, making the ball game 6-5. UCM had runners on first and second with one out, but a ground out to the pitcher and a ground out to the shortstop helped SBU hold onto the lead, winning the game 6-5 in dramatic fashion.

Cory Dudley picked up his first win of the season, pitching 7.2 innings and allowing just 2 earned runs in the win. Jackson Soule led the way offensively for the Bearcats, going 2-3 with 4 RBIs. Hunter Hisky also had two hits, driving in a run as well.

The teams will face off again on Saturday for game two of the series, beginning at 1 PM.
