Bolivar, Mo - The Bearcats started off the series with Fort Hays State hot with two wins in a Friday double header. SBU defeated the Tigers 7-6 in game one, and 6-0 in game two. The Bearcats improve to 8-6 (3-2 MIAA) this season.
Game One
Drew Wagner got the start for the Bearcats. He got two outs early but struggled late in the first giving up four walks and an earned run before being replaced by
David Tongue. Tongue came in and closed the door in the first to hold the Tigers to one run. The bats were silent for the Bearcats in the bottom half of the first as well.
David Tongue continued to duel through the third inning before giving up three singles and two runs in the bottom of the fourth. SBU responded though in the top of the fifth inning with four runs.
Luke Winfrey reached on an error and then stole second to get it started, later scoring on a single by
Caleb Sneed.
Hunter Hisky then doubled to right center, followed by a
Jackson Soule single scoring Sneed. Hisky and Soule then scored on wild pitches giving SBU a 4-3 lead.
Fort Hays responded with a run in the bottom of the 6
th but SBU reclaiming the lead with two in the top of the 7
th. Fort Hays tried to make a comeback with one run in the 8
th but the deciding run in the top of the 9
th by SBU made the difference.
Cole Van Every had a solid showing as well going two and two thirds innings giving up two runs on two hits and a win, followed by
Adam White closing the door in the 9
th for his second save. Soule led the Bearcats at the plate with three hits, two runs, and two RBIs.
Game Two
The Bearcats came out swinging in the second game with
Jackson Soule reaching on an error and
Carl Schwettmann following him with a home run to left field. That gave them a commanding lead after one inning followed by
Dalton Morrow striking out the side on 10 pitches in the bottom half of the first.
In the second inning
Luke Winfrey reached on a walk followed by a
Trevor Lofstrom bomb to left field to make it a commanding 4-0 lead early in the game.
Dalton Morrow was dealing on the mound, not giving up a hit until the 4
th inning. The Bearcats picked up another run in the top of the 5
th on a
Hunter Hisky double down the right field line.
The Bearcats scored again later in the 7
th to give them a comfortable 6-0 lead.
Dalton Morrow finished the game off only giving up three hits, one walk, and no runs to go along with his 11 strikeouts.
Trevor Lofstrom and
Carl Schwettmann led the Bearcats at the plate with one homerun each with two RBIs a piece as well.
