Bearcats Drop Two to Rockhurst in Non-Conference Matchup

Bolivar, Mo. - The double header against Rockhurst was originally scheduled to take place in Kansas City, but due to weather, SBU and Rockhurst played a double header in Bolivar Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks took both games, winning game one 13-3 and game two 4-1. The losses move the Bearcats to 1-10 (0-0 MIAA).

Game One
The Hawks scored early in game one, scoring 3 in the first inning. In the bottom of the third, SBU got the offense going. Paige St. Pierre singled to lead off the inning, and moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt. Thanks to smart baserunning by St. Pierre, she was able to score on a ground ball out, cutting the Rockhurst lead to 3-1.

SBU kept their offense going in the fourth. With one out, Morgan McMullin doubled to right center. She moved over on a ground out and later scored thanks to an RBI double from Kaitlyn Bagby. The Bearcats managed to keep the Hawks quiet until the 6th inning, where Rockhurst scored 5 more, making it an 8-2 game. SBU managed to get one back in the 6th, scoring a run on a Kaitlyn Bagby single, but the Hawks still led 8-3. The visitors managed to score 5 more in the last frame, ending the game 13-3.

Paige St. Pierre went a perfect 3-3 at the plate, scoring one of the SBU runs. Morgan McMullin and Kaitlyn Bagby also had 2 hits each.

Game Two
Rockhurst got things going early once again, scoring a run in the first inning. In the top of the third inning, the Hawks had runners on first and second when the next batter hit a pop up on the infield. Due to runners on first and second with less than two outs, the infield fly rule was in effect, automatically calling the batter out. The ball managed to drop, making the Rockhurst runners think they must advance to the next base, when they didn't due to the infield fly rule. Megan Schellert picked up the ball, tagged the runner going from first to second, and threw out the runner trying to advance from second to third, causing an extremely rare triple play.

With one out in the bottom of the third, Emily Hall drove the ball up the middle for a single. She was able to make it to third after a ground out and a wild pitch, but she was stranded there as the inning came to an end. The Bearcat defense came up solid again in the fourth. After the leadoff runner reached on a single, a line drive was hit at Megan Schellert who made the catch and threw out the runner on first before she could get to the bag, making a double play. The Hawks managed to score two in the fifth, giving them a 3-0 lead. SBU responded with a leadoff hit from Miranda Aguilar. Freshman Taryn Elia then came in to pinch run for Aguilar. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third, setting her up in a good position to score. She was able to score on the next play, a ground ball to the shortstop, 3-1 Rockhurst. The Hawks plated another in the 6th, and the Bearcats couldn't score any more, ending with a 4-1 final.

Morgan McMullin, Miranda Aguilar, and Emily Hall were responsible for SBU's hits in the second game.

The Bearcats picked up another double header tomorrow, playing at McKendree with start times of 2 PM and 4 PM.
