Pittsburg, Kan. – The Bearcats defeated the Gorillas in extra innings Saturday afternoon, giving them their 6
th win on the season and their first conference victory. SBU won 7-6 in 10 innings, improving them to 6-5 (1-1 MIAA) on the year.
Hunter Hisky got SBU in the hits column in the first inning, hitting a single to left center. Carl Schwettmann and
Blake Hobbs both reached base in the inning as well, but none were able to make it home.
Dalton Morrow got the start Saturday afternoon, retiring the first three Pitt State hitters in order. The Bearcats took the lead in the second, thanks to a
Brett Mitchell two-run home run to left field. The Gorillas responded in their half of the second, plating 3 runs to take the lead.
In the third,
Jackson Soule singled to lead things off, followed by a Carl Schwettmann double.
Blake Hobbs hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Soule and evening the score at 3-3. The Gorillas regained the lead in the third, scoring once again to take a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Pitt State scored 2 more to increase their lead to 6-3.
Blake Lutgen and
Tyler Mathys both reached on singles in the sixth inning, but they were both stranded as the inning came to an end. In the eighth,
Brett Mitchell reached on a two out infield single.
Luke Winfrey was then hit by a pitch, allowing
Caleb Sneed to drive in Mitchell and cut PSU's lead to 6-4. With one out in the ninth, Carl Schwettmann reached on an error by the third baseman.
Blake Hobbs grounded out, advancing Schwettmann to second.
Blake Lutgen came in clutch, driving in Schwettmann on a two out single up the middle.
Tyler Mathys then singled to put runners on first and second with two away. The next batter was
Brett Mitchell, tying the game at 6-6 with an RBI single up the middle, scoring
Blake Lutgen.
The Gorillas were able to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but a ground ball to the second baseman put an end to PSU's rally, sending the game to extra innings. SBU wasted no time, scoring the go ahead run in the 10
th.
Caleb Sneed and
Hunter Hisky drew back to back walks to begin the inning. After a strikeout, Carl Schwettmann also walked to load the bases. It was
Blake Hobbs who gave the Bearcats the lead, driving in
Caleb Sneed on a single through the left side. That was all SBU would get, but it was all they needed. The Gorillas had a batter reach on a walk, but was thrown out at second in an attempt to steal second.
David Tongue struck out the next batter, and the third out came on a ground out to third, sealing the victory for SBU.
Brett Mitchell went 3-5 at the plate, scoring 2 runs and driving in 3.
Tyler Mathys also collected 3 hits.
Blake Lutgen,
Jackson Soule, and
Caleb Sneed each had 2 hits.
David Tongue was credited with the win, pitching 1.2 innings and giving up 0 runs on 0 hits.
Game three of the series will take place on Sunday, with a first pitch scheduled for 12 PM.
