Nashville, Tenn. – The SBU Men's Basketball team opened their 2019-20 season with a game against Trevecca Nazarene in the Trevecca Classic. The Bearcats had a near 20-point win, defeating the Trojans 64-45, helping SBU to a 1-0 record to start the year.
TNU got on the board first, but
Brady Smith drained a three for his first official points as a Bearcat, putting SBU ahead 3-2. The teams were later knotted at 8, but SBU scored 8 straight to take a 16-8 lead.
Damian Prgomet had 5 of those points in that run.
Mitch Ganote and
Tyler Williams each made a shot in the paint, boosting SBU's lead to 20-11 with 8 minutes left in the half. The Trojans inched the score back to 23-17, but
Quinn Nelson converted a rare 4-point play, followed by a
Houston Johnson layup to get back to a 29-17 SBU lead. SBU ended the half with a 6-3 run, creating a 35-20 halftime score.
Damian Prgomet made the first two buckets of the second half,
Brady Smith picking up an assist on one of those baskets. The Bearcats kept their foot on the gas, pushing their lead to 25 with 9:53 remaining in the game. Trevecca fought back to get within 16 a couple of times, but
Damian Prgomet and
Tyler Williams kept SBU at a comfortable lead, ending with a 64-45 final.
Damian Prgomet had a double-double in his first game of his senior season, scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Kent Thomas also had double digit points in his Bearcat debut, scoring 10 points.
Joe Miller brought down 11 rebounds and had 8 points to go along with it. Also making an impact in his SBU debut was
Houston Johnson, shooting 4-5 from the field with 2 rebounds and an assist.
The Trevecca Classic action continues for SBU Saturday morning at 11:30 AM, as the Bearcats take on Lake Superior State.
