SBU Football Falls in Tight Game with William Jewell

Liberty, Mo. - The SBU Football team competed against GLVC opponent William Jewell Saturday afternoon. After taking the lead midway through the fourth, the Cardinals would go on to win 14-10. The Bearcats move to 0-5 (0-3 GLVC) on the season.

Jewell received the ball first, SBU held strong with their defense, forcing a three-and-out. A pass interference call kept SBU's first drive alive, but they wouldn't generate more than that. The Bearcat defense continued their strong play with a forced fumble and recovery by De'shawn Tone. However, the SBU offense couldn't move the ball past the Jewell 22, the drive ending with a failed fourth down attempt. The first quarter would end with zeros for both teams.

To begin the second quarter, the Bearcats drove down to the Jewell 28 and attempted a field goal, but it came up short. The drive was highlighted by a 15 yard run by punter Jackson Bagley on 4th and 8. De'shawn Tone forced another fumble on the next Jewell Drive, giving SBU possession on their own 20. On third and four, the Cardinals intercepted Bryse Salik and took over on the SBU 18. They would go on to score a touchdown with 2:47 remaining in the half. An 11 yard completion from Salik to Mountain and a 14 yard completion from Salik to Eric Knight helped drive the Bearcats to the Jewell 45, but the drive stalled there. The Cardinals led 7-0 going into halftime.

Southwest Baptist drove the field on their first drive of the second half, scoring a touchdown on a 4 yard connection from Bryse Salik to Gage Anderson. Highlights of the drive include a 14 yard Eric Knight rush, and a 26 yard complete pass from Salik to EJ Hackett. On their second drive, the Bearcats drove down to the William Jewell 17, but the drive ended with a missed field goal.

The Bearcats began the fourth quarter with the ball. The drive was capped with a 19 yard field goal to give SBU a 10-7 lead with only 11:41 remaining in the game. The teams would swap unsuccessful drives before William Jewell drove the field and scored a touchdown. The Cardinals took the lead 14-10 with 4:39 left. SBU couldn't get anything going on their final drives, giving Jewell a 14-10 victory.

Quarterback Bryse Salik finished the day with a stat line of 18 for 37 for 180 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. Eric Knight rushed 21 attempts for 80 yards. EJ Hackett led the receiving column for the Bearcats, hauling in 6 receptions for 67 yards. Defensively, De'shawn Tone collected 10 total tackles and forced 3 fumbles on the day. Tyler Curts also collected 6 tackles, all of them being solo tackles.

Next Saturday, SBU begins a four game home stand, starting with a 1 PM game against McKendree on October 13.
