Bolivar, Mo. - Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent McKendree came to town Saturday afternoon, topping Southwest Baptist 26-23 in overtime. SBU falls to 0-6 (0-4 GLVC) on the season.
McKendree got the ball first, but the SBU defense held them to a three-and-out. Starting with the ball on their own 35, the Bearcats drove the field and scored a touchdown on their opening drive. Highlights of the drive include 11 and 14 yard rushes from
Eric Knight, capped off with a 12 yard touchdown pass from
Bryse Salik to
Keelan Lewis. On McKendree's second drive,
De'shawn Tone forced another fumble that was recovered by SBU. Southwest Baptist's second drive ended with a 40 yard successful field goal attempt from
Alec Gathright. The Bearcat defense kept the pressure high, intercepting the McKendree quarterback to give their offense possession on the McKendree 25 yard line.
Eric Knight pounded a 6 yard rush into the end zone to give SBU a 17-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.
With a little over 8 minutes left in the half, McKendree appeared to be driving. On third and three from the SBU 35,
De'shawn Tone came in clutch with a sack, taking McKendree back to the SBU 47, forcing them to punt. After a short SBU drive, McKendree got the ball back with 3:11 remaining in the half. The visitors drove the field and scored a touchdown with just 17 seconds left in the second quarter, making a 17-7 SBU lead going into halftime.
SBU received the ball first in the second half, driving all the way down to the McKendree 18. The Bearcats decided to go for it on 4th and 1, but
Eric Knight couldn't get past the first down marker. On McKendree's first drive of the half,
De'shawn Tone forced another fumble, recovered by Southwest Baptist. The Bearcats were able to get the ball to the McKendree 29, where
Alec Gathright would make a 46 yard field goal, giving SBU a 20-7 lead. Going 70 yards in 4 plays, McKendree scored another touchdown, but SBU blocked the extra point, making it a 20-13 game. The teams went back and forth with possessions most of the fourth quarter. McKendree took over with only 3:02 remaining in the game. The SBU defense forced McKendree to go for it on 4th and 6 from their own 17 yard line, and they had 3 consecutive gains of 10, 28, and 14 yards to set them up at the SBU 31. McKendree would later connect on a 24 yard touchdown, knotting the game at 20 a piece.
Southwest Baptist got the first possession in overtime, starting at the visiting 25 yard line. Unable to reach the end zone, the Bearcats settled for a field goal, giving them a 23-20 lead. McKendree would find the end zone on their possession in overtime, giving them a 26-23 overtime victory.
Bryse Salik finished 13 of 27 for 67 yards and a touchdown with one interception.
Eric Knight rushed 35 attempts for 155 yards and a touchdown. Knight also led the receiving category for SBU, hauling in 3 receptions for 26 yards.
Defensively,
Uwadia Ogbebor collected 11 tackles, 8 solo, and had the lone SBU interception.
Tyler Curts also had 10 tackles on the day, and
De'shawn Tone forced three fumbles on the afternoon.
The Bearcats host Truman State next Saturday, game time is at 2 PM.
