Phil Staback

Phil Staback will be entering his ninth year (2021-22) as a member of the SBU Football Coaching Staff. This season, Staback will primarily coach the quarterbacks. 

Under Coach Staback, the Bearcat offense has been among the top offenses in the Great Lakes Valley Conference over the past four years. The Bearcat offense has produced a combined 41 All-Conference selections (4 All-MIAA and 37 All-GLVC) from 2013-2020, including the spring 2021 GLVC Offensive Player of the Year in quarterback Cooper Callis. Staback has also produced 3 All-Americans with Sammy Zeqiraj (2016), Bubba Jenkins (2016), and Nathan Mourik (2014).

During the 2017 season, the Bearcat offense finished 2nd in the GLVC in passing offense (279 YPG), 3rd in total offense (410.5 YPG) and 3rd in scoring (30.7). In two games, three WR’s surpassed the 100 yard receiving mark. Kendrick Payne finished his career as the GLVC All-Time career leader in touchdown receptions (35). TJ Edwards finished the season 2nd in the conference and 16th in the nation for total Offense (301 YPG). 8 Offensive players were named All-GLVC in 2017.

During the 2016 season, the Bearcat offense finished 10th in the nation and 1st in the GLVC in total offense (505 YPG) and 1st in the GLVC in scoring offense (42.1). Under Staback's tutelage, running back Bubba Jenkins reset many records. Jenkins became the All-Time rushing leader in GLVC history (3,024 yards) along with breaking the SBU & GLVC single season rushing record (1,560 yards). Jenkins finished 3rd in the nation in rushing yards. Quarterback TJ Edwards broke the SBU single season passing touchdowns record (34). Edwards finished the season ranked 4th in the nation for points responsible for (264), 8th in the nation in passing touchdowns (34), 10th in the nation for total offense (328.4 YPG), and 21st in the nation for passing efficiency (158.0). 10 offensive players were named All-GLVC with Edwards being named GLVC Offensive Player of the Year. 5 Offensive players received Don Hansen All-Super Region 4 Team honors, and Jenkins and Zeqiraj earned Don Hansen All-American Honors.

During the 2015 season, the Bearcat offense finished 2nd in the GLVC in Scoring Offense (35.2) and 3rd in total Offense (429.6 YPG). Jenkins became only the 4th Bearcat in school history to rush for over 1,000 yards, and finished the season with 1,201 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns. Jenkins broke the GLVC rushing yards record in a game (258). Edwards finished off his freshman campaign by throwing for 2,304 yards with 21 Touchdowns to only 4 interceptions while also rushing for 479 yards and 8 scores on the ground. 7 offensive players were named All-GLVC with Edwards being named GLVC Freshman of the Year.

During the 2014 season, the Bearcat offense finished 2nd in the GLVC in Scoring Offense (31.3) and Total Offense (432.4 YPG). Quarterback Willie Tindal had a record breaking season in 2014. Tindal set single season records for the GLVC and SBU for passing yards (3,578), passing touchdowns (31), 300-yard performances (6) along with single game records in passing yards (479) and passing touchdowns (6). Nathan Mourik set SBU's and the GLVC's single season receiving yards mark (1,398) and touchdowns record (13). Mourik also broke SBU and GLVC single game records in receiving yards (219) and touchdowns (5). 5 Offensive players were named All-GLVC, and Mourik was named to a BSN 1st Team All-American, Don Hansen All-American, and 1st Team All-Region.

During the 2013 Season, the Bearcat offense finished 7th in the MIAA in Passing Offense (272.2 YPG). Derwyn Lauderdale finished 2nd in the conference with 86 receptions for 1,056 yards. 4 offensive players were named All-MIAA.

Prior to coming to SBU, Phil was the Graduate Assistant Coach for Quarterbacks at Lindenwood University for two years. He also played professionally for the Wichita Wild in the Indoor Football League.

Staback graduated from Lindenwood University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice. In college, Staback was one of the top quarterbacks in Lindenwood history and was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2009, he led Lindenwood to the NAIA National Championship game and was named Honorable Mention All-American. He completed 67.5 percent of his passes for 3,381 yards and 36 touchdowns. In 2010, Staback earned 1st team All-American honors after throwing for 3,329 yards and 34 touchdowns. He completed 75.3 percent of his passes and set a NAIA record for most yards per passing attempt. Staback still holds the NAIA career record for most yards per pass attempt and highest percentage of passes for a touchdown.
