Johnny Stilwell will be entering his second season (2022-23) with the SBU Bearcats and will take over as Defensive Coordinator and Recruiting Coordinator. Coach Stilwell will be coaching the defensive line.
 
Johnny is a native of Corona, CA and joined the SBU football staff fall of 2021. He coached senior defensive end Chance Deitz to a 2nd Team All-Conference honor. Before joining SBU, Stilwell served as the Defensive Line coach for the Missouri Valley College football coaching staff for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Prior to his time at Missouri Valley, Stilwell was the Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers and Specialist coach, along with Defensive Line coach at Feather River College, a junior college program in Northern California. There he coached 6 All-Conference players and helped 17 of his student-athletes earn scholarships to four-year programs. Stilwell was also part of the TRiO program and was an Academic Advisor.
 
Previously, Stilwell coached at Fort Scott Community College, serving as Special Teams Coordinator, Recruiting Coordinator and Wide Receivers coach. He coached several all-conference players, and nationally ranked recruits that transferred to programs like NCAA Division I Western Kentucky, NCAA Division II Missouri Western and NAIA Morningside (IA).
 
Other coaching stops for Stilwell include Kenwood High School (TN) for one season, and Central Methodist University (MO) for three seasons. Stilwell received his Master's in Education degree from Central Methodist and held several different coaching roles on the defensive side. He coached a number of all-conference student-athletes and helped the team to the 2009 Aztec Bowl in Mexico City, Mexico.
 
Stilwell played at Mayville State University (ND), earning all-conference honors. He graduated with a B.S. in Secondary Math Education. He played high school football at Nationally ranked Centennial High School in Corona, Calif., winning two CIF championships.
 
Stilwell and his wife, Sarah, a native of Olathe, Kan., have two daughters, Scarlet and Freya.
