Indianapolis, Ind. – The SBU men's soccer team battled until the final minute Sunday afternoon, scoring a late equalizer to earn a 1-1 draw against the University of Indianapolis at Key Stadium. The result moves the Bearcats to 4-3-2 overall and 1-3-2 in GLVC play, increasing their point total to five.
The two sides played through a scoreless opening half with SBU generating four shots while holding the Greyhounds to three.
Joe Wright provided much of the early pressure for the Bearcats, recording all four of SBU's first-half attempts.
UIndy increased its pressure after the break, but goalkeeper Jan-Henry Schäfer and the Bearcat defense continued to keep the Greyhounds off the board. Schäfer made five saves in the second half, including three in a span of less than four minutes early in the period.
The Greyhounds finally broke through in the 81st minute when Keaton Barnhizer scored to give UIndy a 1-0 advantage. Facing a late deficit on the road, the Bearcats continued to battle.
Their persistence paid off with just 49 seconds remaining. Wright found the back of the net in the 90th minute with an olympico for his team-leading seventh goal of the season, pulling SBU even at 1-1 and securing a point on the road.
Schäfer played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with five saves, helping keep SBU within striking distance throughout the second half.
SBU will look to earn more points on the road this upcoming Wednesday as they take on Truman State at 2:30 p.m. in Kirksville, Missouri.
