Bolivar, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University Athletics is proud to announce the 2026 SBU Athletics Hall of Fame class. This year's class features four deserving inductees who have left a lasting impact on Bearcat Athletics through excellence, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the university.
The 2026 Hall of Fame class includes
Charles "CPat" Taylor,
Fred Towns,
Christina Zentai, and the
1983-86 Original Football Team.
The class will officially be inducted on
Friday, October 2 following the Alumni Dinner as part of Homecoming Weekend. The celebration will continue
Saturday, October 3, as the inductees participate in the Homecoming Parade before being recognized during the Bearcats' Homecoming football game. Additional event details will be announced at a later date.
Charles "CPat" Taylor – President (1996-2018)
Dr. Charles "CPat" Taylor served as the longest-tenured president in Southwest Baptist University history, leading the institution for 22 years from 1996-2018. Throughout his presidency, Taylor transformed the university through visionary leadership, significant fundraising efforts, and a commitment to the student experience.
During his tenure, more than
$122 million was raised to advance the university, while SBU's endowment grew from
$4.6 million to more than $32 million. His leadership helped make possible many projects that continue to benefit Bearcat Athletics today, including the construction of the
Jane and Ken Meyer Wellness and Sports Center and the fundraising efforts that brought artificial turf to
Plaster Stadium.
Taylor was also known for the personal relationships he built across campus. He became famous for remembering students by name and personally handed
16,963 diplomas to SBU graduates throughout his presidency. A passionate supporter of every Bearcat athletic program, Taylor was a familiar face at countless contests and celebrations while continually championing student-athletes. In recognition of his impact beyond campus, he was named the
2016 Springfield Business Journal Men of the Year Honoree.
Fred Towns – Men's Basketball (1974-76)
One of the greatest rebounders in program history, Fred "Superfly" Towns established himself as one of the most dominant players ever to wear a Bearcat uniform during his two seasons at Southwest Baptist.
Towns still holds the program's career record with a
15.9 rebounds per game average while ranking second all-time with
842 career rebounds and second with an
18.2 points per game scoring average. He also ranks fourth in career field goal percentage (.561).
His dominance was equally impressive in a single season. Towns owns the top two rebounding seasons in program history with
447 rebounds in 1975-76 and
395 rebounds in 1974-75. He also ranks second and third in single-season rebounding average and remains among the program leaders in field goals made. His presence on the glass produced unforgettable performances, including the top three rebounding games in school history with
31, 29, and 25 rebounds during the 1974-75 season.
Following his collegiate career, Towns' athletic ability earned him opportunities in both football and basketball. He was drafted by the
Dallas Cowboys and the
Seattle SuperSonics practice team and continued his basketball career professionally overseas in China.
Towns sadly passed away on April 28th, 2023. He is survived by his four children, Megan, Willie, Chris Bryant, and Fitzgerald.
Christina Zentai – Women's Tennis (2013-16)
Christina Zentai helped lead one of the most successful eras in SBU women's tennis history while becoming one of the most decorated student-athletes the program has ever produced.
A
four-time All-American, Zentai earned national recognition in singles in 2016 while also receiving three doubles All-America honors alongside fellow Hall of Famer Fanni Varga and Lara Soares. She captured three ITA Fall Championships, winning two doubles titles with Varga and the 2014 singles championship, while also being named the
ITA Regional Freshman of the Year in 2013.
Zentai posted remarkable career records of
90-4 in doubles and
72-7 in singles, competing primarily in the top three positions throughout her career. Her 2015 doubles season alongside Varga was particularly memorable as the duo finished a perfect
19-0.
As a cornerstone of one of the nation's premier programs, Zentai helped lead the Bearcats to
four NCAA Elite Eight appearances, a
Final Four appearance,
four MIAA Tournament Championships, and
two MIAA Regular Season Championships, cementing her legacy among the greatest players in program history.
1983-86 Original Football Team
The final inductee represents a group whose impact reaches far beyond wins and losses. The 1983-86 Original Football Team laid the foundation for everything Bearcat Football has become.
When the program was established in 1982, approximately
150 student-athletes were recruited to help launch Southwest Baptist football. By the completion of the inaugural four-year cycle in 1986, only
15 players had remained committed through every challenge, demonstrating extraordinary perseverance and loyalty. Those individuals were recognized in the fall of 1986 with a commemorative plaque honoring their dedication.
These pioneers helped establish the culture, identity, and standards of Bearcat Football while enduring the growing pains of a brand-new program. They practiced without proper football facilities, trained using outdated high school equipment, and embraced the difficult work required to build something that would last for generations.
More importantly, they embodied the program's original mission of developing Christian young men through the game of football who would positively impact the world for Christ. While football served as the platform, servant leadership remained the ultimate goal. Their commitment to graduating, serving others, and representing Christ continues to define the values upon which the program was built.
Forty years later, their sacrifices remain woven into the fabric of Bearcat Football, making them fitting inductees into the SBU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Southwest Baptist University Athletics congratulates the 2026 Hall of Fame class and looks forward to celebrating the lasting impact each inductee has made on the university during Homecoming Weekend this October.
