Bolivar, Mo. – Despite a long day at the ballpark the Bearcats went to bed happy sweeping the Newman Jets Saturday. With both games combining for nearly seven hours of play, the Bearcats were able add two more wins to the column moving to 17-23 on the season.
Game 1: Win, 18-12
In a game that took 30 combined runs, 31 combined hits, and over four hours of play, SBU came out on top with a late comeback. After taking an early 6-0 lead through the first two innings, the Jets went on an eight to one run through the top of the 5
th. Trailing by one in the bottom half,
Raydley Legito and
Conner Titus each recorded RBI's to regain the lead. After another three straight runs by the jets holding a 9-11 lead in the 8
th, the Bearcats piled on with nine in the bottom half of the 8
th holding on for an 18-12 victory.
Conner Titus led the team with five RBI's off two hits including three walks.
Scott Allan tagged on four more RBI's while Legito,
Jared Pugrad, and
Cooper Burgess each had two. Five Bearcat pitcher saw time on the mound including
Dane Rodgers,
Conner Hammonds,
Nash Crosby,
Matthew St. Pe, and
Jude Sundquist who pitched the final 2.1 innings for the win.
Game 2: Win, 5-4
The second game of the day turned out to be more of a pitchers dual as both teams combined for less than 10 runs. SBU started the same as the first scoring the first three runs. Newman bounced back in the 4
th with four runs of their own to overtake the lead. After two Bearcat runs in the 4
th, including an RBI single from
Reese Ruderman, both teams remained scoreless as SBU held on for the win.
It was ace pitching from
Roberto Garcia and
Koen Van T Klooster that led the Bearcats to victory. Garcia recorded his second win of the season striking out eight batters and only allowing six hits. Klooster came in for the final two innings allowing only one hit with four strikeouts for his third save of the season.
Southwest Baptist will return to GLVC action this upcoming weekend as they travel to Liberty, Missouri for a series against the William Jewell Cardinals. This will begin on Friday, April 24
th at 6:00 p.m.
