Bolivar, Mo. – SBU softball completed a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon against Ouachita Baptist (OBU). The teams split the day, each coming from behind, moving SBU to 14-18 on the season.
Game 1: Win, 5-4
It was the Bearcats who started down early in this game as OBU took a three-run lead in the first two innings. A two run third inning from SBU brought it within one, which included an RBI single by
Taylor Howard. After a game tying run by
Joscelyn Bennett in the 4
th, locking the game at 3-3, the teams remained scoreless throughout the remainder of scheduled innings, forcing extra play.
With a runner automatically being put on 2
nd base, both teams scored runs in the 8
th forcing another 9
th inning. Here it was the Bearcat defense that propelled SBU to the victory, as
Keeley Elsea made a fantastic catch in centerfield to then get the runner at 2
nd base, who did not tag up for a double play. With the Tigers not scoring in the 8
th, SBU's strong at bats forced the bases loaded where all it took was a wild pitch from OBU for
Cambri Van Loo to score the winning run.
Shalie Wooden started on the mound and went the whole game securing her 8
th win of the season.
Game 2: Loss, 3-7
This go around it was the Bearcats who took an early lead that forced the Tigers to claw their way back. Elsea opened up the game with a home run in the bottom of the first. An inning later, SBU took advantage of errors by OBU to score two runs for an early 3-0 lead. The Tigers went on to score seven unanswered runs to take the win.
Cambri Van Loo started on the mound throwing for four innings, followed by
Abby Leer who went three innings and had six strikeouts in that time. Van Loo recorded the loss.
SBU will return to action this weekend as they continue conference play. First it will be University of Indianapolis on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at the SBU softball field.
