Ozark, Mo. – The SBU beach volleyball team completed their second weekend of play this past weekend in four total games against Oklahoma Wesleyan (OKWU) and Ottawa University. The Bearcats went 3-1 on the weekend, moving to 3-5 overall. SBU beach volleyball also got to recognize and honor their one senior in
Rory Stanley.
Game 1 vs OKWU: Win, 3-2
The first game of the weekend took place at an early 8 a.m., but the Bearcats were still able to prevail with a tight 3-2 victory. Wins came at the #2, #3, and #4 spot.
Rory Stanley and
Sara Younkin had the biggest win from this match defeating their opponent 21-13, 21-15 at the 4
th spot.
Bre Perez and
Maya Keller, at the #2 spot swept their opponent 21-17, 21-18. In the closest battle of the match,
Abbey Garner and
Reagan Hoerning completed a comeback in three sets at the #3 spot (16-21, 21-10, & 15-6). This win gave first year head coach
Paityn Walker her first win of her career.
Game 2 vs Ottawa: Win, 5-0
A few hours later, SBU was able to dominate their second opponent with an easy 5-0 sweep and only one match going to three sets. At #1
Addi Fanning and
Melanie Cox won 21-15, 21-16. In succeeding spots, Keller/Perez, Hoerning/Garner, and Stanley/Younkin all continued their strong weekend start winning 26-24, 21-19; 21-6, 21-12; 21-18, 21-19 respectively. At the 5
th spot,
Fayth Kaminski and
Savannah Chance had a tough battle but came out on top in three sets 18-21, 21-15, and 15-6.
Game 3 vs OKWU: Loss, 2-3
Along with being their only loss of the weekend, it was a close match all the way through narrowly falling to the Eagles. The duo of Cox and Fanning were able to claim one of those points winning three sets 20-22, 21-18, 15-9. Stanley and Younkin continued their perfect weekend dominating their opponent in two sets 21-11 and 21-15.
Game 4 vs Ottawa: Win, 3-2
The final match of the weekend was closer than anticipated but Southwest Baptist was still able to prevail. After having to forfeit a point at the #2 spot and going down 0-1, it put the pressure on the other Bearcats to step up. Fanning and Cox did just that dominating at the #1 spot 21-11 and 21-12. Stanley and Younkin completed a 4-0 day winning in both sets 21-15 and 21-17. It came down to a long three set match that was won by Hoerning/Garner 21-14, 17-21 and 15-12.
The team will return to action this upcoming weekend as they travel down to Arkansas to take on three different opponents. It will start on Friday as they play Texas A&M Kingsville at 2:00 p.m. then University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 4:00 p.m.
