Baseball Takes Two Off Greyhounds Ending Home Stand

Bolivar, Mo. – SBU baseball continued conference play Friday and Saturday as they battled the Indianapolis (UIndy) Greyhounds. The teams split the series each picking up two wins moving SBU to 9-11 (3-5 GLVC) on the season.

Game 1: Win, 7-6
It was a wild series from the very first game as the nine-inning game took 11 to find a winner. The Greyhounds started out the game with a five-run advantage through the first five innings. Two runs in the 5th and 7th inning by SBU brought it within three, but an insurance run by UIndy extended it back to four. Beau Honeycutt started the comeback with an RBI double that scored Lane Snow. Raydley Legito added in two more runs scoring Honeycutt and Jared Pugrad. Finally, Ryan Ray tied the game with a sacrifice fly scoring Collin McLemore sending the first game to extra innings. In the 11th, Pugrad walked the game off with a double to left center scoring Reese Ruderman giving SBU their first victory over the Greyhounds since 2023. Koen Van T Klooster earned the win for SBU pitching the final three innings throwing four strikeouts.

Game 2: Win, 8-7
The second game was slightly less thrilling as the Bearcats led for a majority of the game. This started in the first inning as Reese Ruderman singled scoring Legito. Shortly following was Cameron Dean knocking in Ruderman for a 2-0 lead. The Greyhounds briefly took the lead in the 2nd scoring three. In the bottom half of the second, Cooper Burgess, Ruderman, Legito, and Ryan Ray all notched RBI's putting SBU back up 6-3. The Bearcats continued to notch some insurance runs in the 5th and 6th, that ended up playing a key role as they went into the final inning up 8-5. A rough start by SBU had UIndy putting the pressure on scoring a run making it a two-run game. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, two outs, Austin Pokley singled to right scoring the first runner, then the runner on 2nd was called out trying to advance home after a perfect throw from Legito, ending the game giving SBU the victory. Roberto Garcia earned the win while Jude Sundquist recorded the save.

Game 3: Loss, 16-19
The third game of the series went the same as the first game going into extra innings, but this ended in favor of Indianapolis. The high scoring affair had SBU scoring five runs in the final two innings forcing extras. But a three-run 9th by the Greyhounds put it out of reach of the SBU bats. Senior Beau Honeycutt had two homeruns in the game that gave him four RBI's.

Game 4: Loss, 4-14
Despite thrilling first three games of the series, the final game was all Greyhounds from start to finish. It started with nine unanswered runs in the first five innings. SBU showed life in the bottom of the fifth after Hayden Prewitt hit an RBI single and Ryan Ray hit a three-run homerun making it 9-4. Five more runs from the Greyhounds had the game ending in the 7th.

SBU baseball will get to relax a little bit over Spring break before returning to action Friday, March 20th on the road. They will take on McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois at 1:00 p.m.
