Softball Downs Lopers, Hornets to Split Midwest College Classic

Kansas City, Mo. – The SBU softball team wrapped up a big week Saturday afternoon in the Midwest College Classic. They went 4-2 on the week, sweeping Mission University earlier in the week, then defeating two MIAA opponents on Friday and Saturday. They are now 6-10 on the season.

After an early week dominant sweep of the Patriots (13-2, 16-0) the Bearcats took on some of the top teams in Division II at the Midwest College Classic.

Game 1 vs Wayne State: L, 5-7
The Bearcats had a tough battle against the Wildcats, starting with an early lead but falling behind as Wayne State had four unanswered runs. Heading into the final inning SBU responded with four runs to take a 5-4 lead in the top half. This came from a two RBI double from Keeley Eslea and two RBI home run from Emily Titus. Wayne State responded with a three-run home run to win the game in walk off fashion.

Game 2 vs Nebraska-Kearney: W, 5-3
The second game of the day had the opposite result for SBU as they responded with a walk off homerun of their own. After each team scored three runs a piece in the first three innings, the game remained scoreless into the 7th. This is when sophomore Emily Titus came in clutch blasting a shot over centerfield wall for two RBI's and an SBU victory.

Game 3 vs (RV) Washburn: L, 1-5
On Saturday, SBU battled the nationally recognized Ichabods falling 1-5. Jacie Frencken recorded the one RBI for the Bearcats off a single that scored Elsea. Frencken went a perfect 3-3 from the batters box throughout the game. Joscelyn Bennett added two hits herself.

Game 4 vs Emporia State: W, 7-4
In the final game of the weekend, the Bearcats completed a comeback in a high scoring affair. This game included two homeruns from SBU, first from senior Shalie Wooden who launched a two-run blast in the second inning. Elsea broke a tie in the bottom of the 4th, with her third homerun of the week. Shalie Wooden completed the game for SBU on the mound securing her second win of the weekend.

SBU softball will return home for 10 straight games over the next two weeks. This will begin with Arlington Baptist on Friday.
