Bearcats Fall in Pair of Matches in Arkansas

Box Score 1 Magnolia, Ark. — The Southwest Baptist University women's tennis team went 0-2 this weekend, falling to Southern Arkansas University (SAU) 0-4 on Friday and Delta State University 1-4 on Saturday. The two losses put the Bearcats at 1-6 for the season.
 
SBU vs SAU on Friday, February 27
 
On Friday, the Bearcats competed hard against SAU but ultimately fell 1-4. Starting strong in doubles play, Defne Ursan and Isabella Canedo in the #1 spot defeated their opponents 6-2. However, the SAU Muleriders came back to secure the doubles point by winning the next two matches. Maria Clara Zotti and Sammi Liu in the #2 spot fell 1-6, and Ally Bowser and Olivia McGruder in the #3 lost 2-6. 
 
In singles play, the Bearcats attempted to come back but ultimately fell short. Ursan in the #2 spot fell in two sets, both 4-6. Even though Zotti in the #3 spot fell in two sets, she pushed her opponent (4-6, 6-7). In the #4 spot, Canedo lost her match 0-6, 1-6 with SAU clinching their fourth point to secure a victory. Liu in the #1 spot didn't finish her match as she forced her opponent into a third set. Bowser and McGruder in the #5 and #6 spots also didn't finish out their matches.
 
SBU vs Delta State on Saturday, February 28
 
On Saturday, the Bearcats looked for redemption as they faced the Delta State University Statesmen. Unfortunately, the Statesmen started off by clinching the point in doubles play within the first two matches. Zotti and Liu fell in a close 4-6 match and Bowser and McGruder battled hard but lost 1-6. Ursan and Canedo stopped play in the middle of their matches when Delta State clinched their victory. 
 
In singles play, Ursan in the #2 spot was the only Bearcat to secure a victory in a tough match, winning her two sets (6-4, 6-2). Delta State clinched the match by winning the next three singles points. Canedo in the #4 spot fell in a tough two sets (0-6, 2-6). In the #5 spot, McGruder battled hard during the first set but ultimately fell (4-6, 1-6). Lastly, Bowser lost her match in two sets (0-6, 0-6). Liu in the #1 spot and Zotti in the #3 spot both forced their opponents into third sets but left their matches unfinished when Delta State secured their victory. Liu went 6-7, 6-2, 4-2, and Zotti went 3-6, 7-6, 5-4.
