Elsea Hits .500 At DII Classic

Branson, Mo. – The SBU softball team competed in the DII Classic Thursday and Friday in Branson, Missouri against four different NCAA Division II teams. During the trip, the Bearcats fell in all four games, with two of them going to extra innings, moving to 1-7 on the season.

In game one, SBU fell 1-2 to the Northwest Missouri Bearcats for the second time this season. All runs were scored in the first two innings, with Keeley Elsea knocking in the oen run for the purple Bearcats.

The second game on Saturday was also a one run game, as they fell 2-3 to Christian Brothers (CBU) in eight innings. After falling behind early, the Bearcats battle back with runs in back-to-back innings to tie the game at two in the sixth. Despite the comeback, CBU walked it off in the 8th inning with a sacrifice fly.

Starting out the second day on Friday, the Bearcats struggled early against the strong offense of Missouri Western, where they ended up falling 3-16. For the third straight game, Elsea recorded two hits throughout the contest.

In the final game of the classic, SBU took on a Northern Sun opponent in Winona State falling to them in the 9th inning 1-4. The only scoring in regulation came in the 4th inning when Winona State homered and Elsea was able to cross the plate due to an error.

Sophomore Keeley Elsea highlighted the weekend hitting an incredible .500 going 6-12. This helped increase her season average to .423 while also leading the team in runs scored with 11. Her on base percentage for the weekend of .600 helped Elsea contribute on four of the teams' runs.

SBU softball will get a week to relax as they have their first home games in a week. They'll host the Northeastern Sate Riverhawks in Bolivar on Saturday, February 21st at 1:00 p.m.
