Evansville, Ind. — Southwest Baptist University's men's and women's swim teams rounded out their first three days at the 13th annual GLVC Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Championships with 133 points for the women's team and 112 points for the men's.
The top-24 swimmers in each event advance to finals and also earn points for their team.
Grace Simon was the first SBU swimmer to earn points at the GLVC Championships when she placed 20th in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:02.61.
While Simon is the only individual SBU swimmer to advance to finals so far, others have been close.
Ian McCorkle, on the men's team, placed 25th in the 200 yard freestyle, only one tenth of a second behind the swimmer who placed 24th.
Although the Bearcats haven't dominated the podium, their squad stands out for their hard work and team culture. Over the first two days of competition, multiple Bearcats dropped their times significantly compared to their entry times. Abigail Peugh shaved 18.72 seconds off her time in the 1000 yard freestyle, displaying the immense progress she's made this season. SBU's relays also improved their times with the women's 'A' Relay in the 800 yard freestyle relay dropping 4.73 seconds off their entry time and the men's 'A' Relay dropping 17.49 seconds off of their time and beating out Truman State University.
Coach
Gavin Hagar recognizes his team's efforts, commenting on the squad's high spirits even as they battle the difficulties of championships. He says, "We will honor God not only through our results but more importantly our process. By carrying ourselves with confidence and joy, we will honor God."
The Bearcats face two more days of competition where their determination and work ethic will continue to shine through.
