Troester, Littleton Lead Bearcats in Home Meet

9/5/2025 4:09:00 PM

Bolivar, Mo. - The air was still and quiet, with only a slight chatter from parents and supportive fans. Then, a sudden gunshot broke the silence, and the SBU women's cross-country team began their race, staying together in a tight pack before the first bend.

The Bearcats kicked off their season with a strong performance at the Bearcat Invitational held on their home turf, the Bolivar Municipal Golf Course finishing in 2nd place. Freshman Gracie Troester led the charge with a 4th-place finish, followed closely by senior Olivia Littleton, who crossed the line just 11 and a half seconds later to take 7th.

After the first turn, the ladies moved into the lead pack, working together to set a strong pace. Sophomore Natalie Gerdes and junior Lily Hunsucker were right in the front group, leading the way. All four runners showed exceptional speed and determination, clocking times under seven minutes for the first 1.2 miles.

The team was consistently motivated by Coach Corey McElhaney, who raced across the course to cheer on each runner. His high spirits and continuous support helped foster a team culture where everyone celebrates each other's successes.

That early race teamwork and hard work paid off in the final stretch. Troester and Littleton continued to battle among the top racers, showcasing a powerful blend of freshman speed and senior experience on this course. Overall, the girls delivered an outstanding team performance, securing an impressive second-place finish at their home invitational—a powerful way to start the season and a testament to their potential.

Southwest Baptist will return to action next weekend as they travel down to Springfield, for the Springfield Cross Meet. This meet will also take place in the morning beginning at 9:00am.
