Bolivar, Mo. - The ladies of Southwest Baptist University's volleyball team gear up for a Kansas City road trip after opening conference play with two hard fought home losses.
Â
The first of these two losses came on Friday at the hands of the other purple Bearcats in the GLVC. SBU fell to McKendree in three sets despite each set being closely contested. There was only a ten point differential between the two teams through all three sets combined, and two of the sets were won by the minimum of two points. Less than 24 hours later, Southwest Baptist faced off against the University of Missouri - St. Louis. SBU lost this game in three sets as well.
Â
The best individual performances for Southwest Baptist all came against McKendree as three players recorded double-doubles. The first of these players was freshman
Gabriela Dupree who recorded 17 kills and ten digs. She added eight more kills on Saturday, bringing her season total to 170 kills and 3.78 kills per set. These numbers are good enough for 2nd in the GLVC and 2nd among all freshmen in NCAA Division II. The other two SBU players to achieve double-doubles against McKendree were freshman
Allie Hawk and senior
Katie Pogue. Hawk had 14 assists and ten digs in the first double-double of her collegiate career. Pogue scored 11 assists and ten digs in her fourth double-double of the season.
Â
The Bearcats continue their season with a road trip to Kansas City on the first weekend of October. The first stop on this road trip is William Jewell with the match set to begin on Friday, October 3rd at 6:00 pm. The Cardinals are 1-11 so far this season and coming fresh off a weekend in which they only played one match where they were swept. After Friday's match, the Lady Bearcats will make the 30 minute trek to play the team that swept the Cardinals: Rockhurst University. The 8-4 Hawks look to provide a real test for the Bearcats on Saturday at 3:00pm.Â
