Box Score Springfield, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University's Men's Tennis team opened their conference schedule with an upset win over the #28 ranked Drury Panthers. The win moves the Bearcats to an even record of 7-7 (1-0 GLVC) on the season.
SBU won two of the three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. In the #1 spot,
Marcio Silva and
Juan Ignacio Morresi beat their opponents in a close 7-5 game. The Bearcats' other doubles win came in the #3 spot, where
Alejandro Bravo Diaz and
Federico Ivan Riolo won 6-3.
Despite their doubles success, SBU suffered a poor start to the singles matches. The Bearcats only won one of the first four of these matches. This win came in the #2 spot, where
Alejandro Beneyto Sanchez took down his opponent in a close game that went to three sets (4-6, 6-4, 7-5). Some of the Bearcats' losses were close, however, with
Silva in the #1 spot lasting until the third set before being beaten (6-3, 3-6, 4-6). With only the #5 and #6 spots to play, things looked bleak for SBU. The Bearcats needed to pull off two points to win the overall match. In the #5 spot,
Morresi made quick work of his opponent in two sets (6-1, 6-4). This brought the entire match down to
Riolo in the #6 spot. After a two hour and twenty-minute battle with his opponent,
Riolo emerged victorious (7-5, 6-4). This sealed the 4-3 win for SBU over their rivals, Drury University.
SBU's Men's Tennis team returns to action in one week in a home match against Quincy University. The match is scheduled to start on Saturday, April 19 at 11:00 am.
