Bolivar, MO - The SBU women's tennis team snagged another victory on the home courts Saturday afternoon against #48 Northwest Missouri State. SBU won with a tight score line of 4-3, bringing their season record to 6-4.
The Bearcats started strong in the doubles matches.
Defne Ursane and
Paula Ballesteros effortlessly defeated their opponents at the #1 spot (6-1).
Leticia Luiz and
Polina Paunova struggled through a tough match and fell at the #2 spot (2-6). However, the Bearcats made a comeback as
Maria Clara Zotti and
Giselle Garcia secured the point for SBU in a tight match at the #3 spot (7-6).
SBU faced a tight matchup in the singles round. It was a difficult beginning part to singles with Ballesteros falling to her opponent in the #1 spot (1-6, 2-6). Ursane fought fiercely against her opponent in a close match but ultimately fell in the #2 spot (6-7, 3-6). Things started to turn around for the Bearcats with Paunova dominating the competition in the #3 spot (6-0, 6-2). Shortly after,
Giselle Garcia put SBU at match point with a 6-4, 6-0 win at the #5 spot. Seeking the final point, Luiz started strong in the first set but ultimately fell to her opponent at the #4 spot (6-4, 2-6, 2-6). It all seemed dire for Southwest Baptist as Clara Zotti fell in her first set 1-6 at the #6 spot. Once again she came up clutch for SBU pushing back winning the next two sets (6-2, 7-5), securing the match and upset to the purple Bearcats.
The Bearcats will return to action as they take on Southern Arkansas University this coming Tuesday, March 25th at 1:00 PM at the John A. Bryant Tennis Center.
