Quincy, Ill. - In the 2025 season finale, the SBU football team fell to the Quincy University Hawks. Their late rally fell just shy with a final score of 35-37, ending their season at 3-7 (2-6 GLVC).
Senior
Avery Lambert ended his collegiate football career in stellar fashion scoring two 50+ yard touchdown receptions. The first was a 57-yard dime from his quarterback
Jaron Saunders where he had his defender beat and could walk into the end zone. At the end of the game, he scored his 4th 50+ yard touchdown of the season with a 54-yarder to bring the game within two. He finished the game with five receptions for 165 total yards averaging 33 yards per reception. Lambert finishes the season with seven touchdowns and 38 receptions for 833 yards, which averages 21.9 yards per catch, 2nd best in SBU single season history.
One Bearcat did not fall shy of an SBU record, instead broke a near 30 year old record. Redshirt sophomore
Caleb Saner recorded 2.5 tackles for loss in the game bringing him to 20.5 on the season, beating out the SBU single single record that had been held since 1996.
Another exciting moment in the game came from senior
Canaan Mullins. As he finished his career at Southwest Baptist he was able to secure the first touchdown of his career. Mullins snagged an 11 yard touchdown pass from Saunders to give SBU a 14-10 lead late into the 1st quarter. Bearcat freshman
Peyton Rasmussen brought in 42 yards off three receptions including a 24-yard touchdown.
SBU defense came up big at the end of the second quarter when
Evan Buchanan blocked an attempted field by the goal which led to a long touchdown return by junior
Jeremiah Besses. His six points to the Bearcat scoreboard was also added with five tackles and two breakups.
Isaac McIntosh led the team in tackles with 12 in the game.
