Bearcat Football Routs Blue Tigers For Third Road Victory

Jefferson City, Mo. - The SBU football team returned to the field Saturday afternoon for another GLVC matchup against the Lincoln Blue Tigers. Never trailing in the game, the Bearcats routed their opponents to a 50-21 victory. That moves them to 3-2 (2-1 GLVC) and a perfect 3-0 road record this season.

The game started out fast as in the first play the Blue Tigers fumbled the ball which was picked up by senior Jed Brandon, who ran it back for a touchdown. That 7-0 lead held for the entire first quarter and minutes of the second, before Lincoln answered back with a TD of their own. Junior Jeremiah Horn scored the second touchdown of the game for the Bearcats with a 30-yard run, juking past multiple defenders. The Blue Tigers tied the game up at 14 just a minute later. The first half ended in spectacular fashion for SBU as Avery Lambert caught a 73-yard touchdown pass from Jaron Saunders giving SBU a 21-14 lead after 30.

That lead of seven expanded to 14 shortly into the 3rd quarter as senior Kamau Ransom caught a 14-yard touchdown pass. This was his 8th touchdown, just halfway through the season, with the SBU single season record being 13.

Not 28 seconds after the Ransom touchdown, the Bearcat defense picked up their second score of the game. Freshman Isaac McIntosh snagged a pass from the Blue Tiger quarterback and ran it back for a 33-yard pick six, expanding the SBU lead to 34-14. Lincoln wasn't done fighting as they would score one more time in the game making it a 13-point game.

Back on offense it only took four plays for Saunders to connect with Lambert one more time with a 32-yard touchdown. With three passing touchdowns in the game, Saunders would add to his scoring with a 26-yard rushing touchdown. Kaleb James tacked on the final three points for SBU to finish the game at 50-21.

Saunders completed 18 of his 28 passing attempts for a total of 310 passing yards to go along with his four total touchdowns. His top target was Lambert who caught six passes for a total of 191 receiving yards, a career high. The Bearcat runners went for a total of 233 net yards along with their two rushing touchdowns. Junior Jobe Smith led all Bearcats with 115 yards, averaging 8.2 per carry. Shawn Cherry (39-yards), Jeremiah Horn (39), and Tyrone Scyrus (26) all contributed to this number.

Defensively, 29 Bearcats recorded at least a tackle in the game. Will Funderburk led the team with eight tackles including one tackle for loss and half a sack. Brandon included his fumble recovery with seven tackles. Caleb Saner notched seven tackles and sent the Blue Tigers behind the line of scrimmage with three tackles for loss.

SBU football will now return home for homecoming week at Plaster Stadium. They will battle the McKendree University Bearcats next Saturday, October 11th at 1:00pm.
