Bolivar, Mo. – The SBU women's volleyball team prepares for the final three weeks of their season after returning to conference play last weekend against the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) and Quincy University.
Both games last weekend resulted in losses for the Bearcats as they fell 1-3 to UIS and 0-3 to Quincy. The highlight of SBU's performances was their blockers as they totaled 17 blocks across both matches. Junior
Rory Stanley led the way in this category with nine block assists on the weekend. She now has 87 total blocks this season, giving her an average of 1.12 blocks per set (3rd in GLVC). Freshman
Kailey Sexton is not too far behind Stanley after adding four block assists and one solo block of her own this past weekend. Sexton now sits at 67 blocks through 66 sets played, giving her an average blocks per set of 1.02 (7th in GLVC).
Southwest Baptist also has two of the best servers in the GLVC in freshman
Chloe Chafins and
Allie Hawk. Chafins tallied three service aces last weekend, giving her 38 on the season. This is good enough to total 0.49 service aces per set, which places Chafins 2nd in the GLVC. Hawk added four service aces to her stat line against UIS and Quincy, boosting her season total to 32. She currently sits 5th in the GLVC with 0.44 service aces per set.
This weekend, the Lady Bearcats embark upon a Halloween road trip up north to Kirksville, Missouri to take on the Truman State Bulldogs on Friday, October 31 at 6:00pm. Truman State is currently in sixth place in the GLVC with a conference record of 4-4 (9-14 overall). The Bulldogs allow the most kills and assists, the second highest hitting percentage, and the third most service aces out of all teams in the GLVC, so SBU will look to have a big game offensively on Friday. Truman State is coming fresh off a Kansas City road trip where they swept the William Jewell Cardinals and got swept by the Rockhurst Hawks.
On Saturday, November 1, SBU continues heading north to Fayette, Iowa to face off against the Upper Iowa Peacocks at 3:00pm. The Peacocks are 5-16 this season and 3-5 in the GLVC. Like Truman State, Upper Iowa is also coming off a 1-1 weekend in Kansas City where they fell to Rockhurst but beat William Jewell. The Peacocks currently sit in the bottom half of the conference in every stat category except digs, so the Bearcats will hope to leave Fayette with a victory.
