Bearcats Set for Major GLVC Showdown Against No. 18 Rockhurst

10/22/2025 9:35:00 AM

Bolivar, Mo. — The Southwest Baptist University men's soccer team is coming off its best weekend of the season, going 2–0 against Truman State and William Jewell in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Bearcats tallied six goals across the two matches, led by standout Graduate Zinedine Cherik, who netted three goals on the weekend.

The historic weekend was capped off with a sweep in the GLVC Player of the Week category. Cherik notched the offensive award after his three goals and goalkeeper Jan-Henery Schäfer won the defensive award after a nine save and one shutout weekend. They are both the first Bearcats to win this award.

SBU now turns its attention to a pivotal home matchup against Rockhurst University, the current GLVC leader and No. 18-ranked team in the nation according to the United Soccer Coaches Top 25. The Hawks enter the contest unbeaten in conference play at 8–0–2, having already secured a berth in the GLVC Tournament and currently have the No. 1 seed in the standings.

With just three matches remaining, all at home, the Bearcats have a prime opportunity to make a late-season push. Currently sitting at 11 points in the GLVC standings, they are only four points out of a spot in the conference tournament with a potential of nine points to get. Friday's clash will serve as a major test and a chance for SBU to measure itself against one of the top programs in Division II soccer.

Kickoff is set for Friday, October 21st, at the SBU Soccer Field in Bolivar. It's shaping up to be a battle between the GLVC's hottest team and the league's top-ranked squad. Come support your Bearcats at 1:30 p.m.
