Bolivar, Mo- Late Thursday evening with hundreds of fans in the stands, loud noises coming from the Meyer Center, the energy was extreme as the Southwest Baptist Women's Volleyball team battled against the Drury University Panthers. This rivalry is an important one not only for the ones on the court but also for the fans in the stands. SBU fell in the match overall 2-3, moving to 4-12 (1-4 GLVC) overall.
The whole game was back and forth as the Bearcats took the first set but the Panthers came back taking the second set. Again the game is back in fourth with long rallies and loud crowds. The third set went back to the Bearcats and fourth set was claimed by the Panthers, forcing a tie breaking fifth set for the third time in the last four seasons. As the gym got intense and everyone was sitting on the edge of their seats for the last and final set, Drury ended the game late into the evening winning 12-15.
SBU's block made things difficult for the Panthers as they claimed 14 on the game, double the amount of their opponents. Freshman
Kailey Sexton led the team in blocks with eight assisted blocks while
Rory Stanley tagged along five assisted and one solo block.
On the attacking side of the ball freshman
Gabriela Dupree had a game high 23 kills, which is also the most in a single game for her. With 223 kills on the season, she is averaging 3.84 kills per set which is currently 2nd best in SBU history. She tagged along 12 digs for a double-double.
The Bearcats took an overall loss in five sets but they are ready to keep going. They will play again at home on Tuesday Oct. 14th vs Mission university at 6pm in the Meyer Wellness Center
