Indianapolis, Ind. – The SBU women's track and field team returned for the final day of the GLVC championships this morning. The Bearcats performed outstanding taking 3
rd place overall, just two points behind the 2
nd place team. They scored 143 total points; 38 points more than they were projected to. The Bearcats won half of the events and broke numerous GLVC records.
"I'm so excited at how our teams competed this weekend!!" Head Coach
Corey McElhaney said, "I told the teams that this weekend ranks up there with some of the best conference championships I have been a part of. Just the heart they presented today made my coaches and I speechless! It's such a blessing to be a part of this family of coaches and athletes.
The Bearcats woke up to a gold morning as junior Lily Simmons kicked off the day with a 1
st place finish. She outlasted 11 other opponents in the high jump improving on her 2
nd place finish from last years' championship.
The graduate student duo of
Alexis Barber and
Lainy Williams showed up in day two of the Championships each splitting the top two spots in two different events. In the women's mile, Barber outran Williams by just under second taking 1
st place. Nearly an hour later, they flip flopped when Williams outkicked Barber for a 1
st place finish in the 800. The bond they both have formed over the last five years, showed when they both smiled and embraced after each finish.
Junior
Collinique Farrington had one of the best performances at a conference championship in school history. She was a part of three different GLVC records, won three 1
st place medals, and was awarded the GLVC Track Athlete of the Year award! Farrington started out the day dominating in the 400-meter with a time of 54.49 setting a new GLVC record. Shortly after she blew the 200-meter record out of the building running a time of 23.40. That time was good enough for an easy 1
st place and a current 3
rd best time in the Nation, only .08 seconds behind the top time in Division II. After three indoor track athletes of the week, three broken records, and three first place finishes she rightfully earned SBU's second straight GLVC Track Athlete of the Year Award.
Capping off the day for the Bearcats the 4x400 meter relay team broke another GLVC record finishing in 1
st, four seconds faster than the 2
nd place team. The team comprised of
Brianna Lord,
Collinique Farrington,
Emily Young, and
Madison Hicks ran a time of 3:48.18. That team had already run a strong time of 3:43.85 this season, currently 9
th in the Nation.
Southwest Baptist women's track and field was not only excellent on the track but off as well, they were voted the sportsmanship winners across the entire conference. A few of the ladies will look to carry this momentum into Nationals in two weeks.
