Detroit, Mich. – The SBU men's tennis team qualified for the NCAA Regional tournament for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. The Bearcats received the #3 seed in the Midwest Region and will take on the #6 seed, Grand Valley State in the opening round. This match will take place Friday April, 28
th at 3:00 PM in Detroit, Michigan.
After not making the regional tournament last season, the bearcat men's tennis team has had a bounce back season going an impressive 17-9. With 15 of their 26 matches coming against ITA ranked teams, they have been battle tested the entire season. Two of their wins came against top 10 teams, defeating #5 Wayne State (host of this weekend) and #7 Northwest Missouri State. They also went a perfect 4-0 on regular season GLVC play and defeated their rivals the Drury Panthers twice once during the season and once during the GLVC tournament. Needing only two wins to advance to the National Sweet 16, the Lakers stand in their way. Then either Wayne State or the Panthers would be their next round opponent.
The dynamic duo of
Alvaro Nunez and
Youssef Nabil are one of the top stories for the Bearcats. Currently on a 12-game win streak at the #2 spot in doubles, they seem nearly unstoppable adding pressure to their opponents' doubles. Nunez continues that pressure in singles as he is undefeated in his previous 10 matches.
