Blakemore Scores Career High 21 in Bearcats First Conference Road Victory

1/12/2023 8:13:00 PM

Box Score Springfield, Ill. – The SBU women's basketball began a three-game road stretch tonight against the Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars. It was a tight game all the way through, but the Bearcats pulled away at the end winning 72-65. This win moves them to 8-8 (2-5 GLVC) on the season.

"I loved our teams' heart and effort to grind out tonight's win on the road." Head Coach Kelsey Keizer said, "Illinois Springfield is a tough matchup for us defensively and I thought we continued to make adjustments to get stops when we needed them. I can't say enough how proud I am of our toughness to hit free throws down the stretch to secure the victory."

The team struggled from beyond the arc but made up for that going 52% from the field and 19-23 from the charity stripe. They also dominated the glass out rebounding the Prairie Stars 32-19.

Sophomore Kelsey Blakemore led the team with a career high 21 points off six field goals and nine free throws. Junior Kallyn Stumbo had a season high and tied her career high with 10 points while also pulling down 5 rebounds.

The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday as they continue their road trip against Quincy University. The Hawks share the same conference record as SBU at 2-5 but the Bearcats lead the head-to-head matchup 8-4. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
