Women's Tennis Incredible Run Falls Short in Round of 16

5/17/2022 3:29:00 PM

Box Score Orlando, Fla.- The SBU Women's tennis team competed in the NCAA tournament round of 16 today against #4 ranked Nova Southeastern. The Bearcats incredible run fell short today as they dropped the match 0-4, finishing the season 17-9.

The Bearcats rostered the smallest possible roster only playing with six the whole season which didn't stop them from making the Bearcats deepest run in 6 years. Those six included Diana Cabrera, Paula Ballesteros, Lola Cincunegui, Ghada Dirninger, Giselle Garcia, and Elsa Pascual.

They struggled to start the season, beginning 2-6. Led by Head Coach Joao Almeida, the shorthanded team went on to win 13 out of their next 14 games. That included an 11-game win streak and a perfect 7-0 in regular season conference play. After coming in 2nd at the GLVC Championships, the Bearcats received the #2 seed in the Midwest Region for their 11th straight NCAA tournament bid. They won two more against University of Findlay and Grand Valley State to reach the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2016.

"Overall, I am happy for the season we had. We didn't get the final result we wanted for the girls, but they fought hard and did great this season. We will have the majority of this team back next year, so we are lucky to have them back. It's time to go home, rest, reassess, and get back to work so we can achieve bigger and better things. It's been a privilege to coach SBU for this last year and I can't wait to see what the future holds, I want to see more smiles like the ones I saw from the girls, and we will work hard to make that happen for both teams!" – Coach Almeida.
