Softball Wraps Up Season with Doubleheader Loss to Truman

Kirksville, Mo. – The 2021 softball season came to an end Sunday afternoon as the Bearcats competed against the Truman State Bulldogs. The hosts took game one by a score of 6-4 and game two 4-0 to put SBU at 2-40 (1-27 GLVC) for the year.

Game One
The game led off with a Renae Gillmore single. She was able to advance to second but was stranded there. A couple innings later, she doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a Katlynn McConville single. The scoreless tie was broken on a Kaitlyn Bagby single to left, scoring Gillmore. Although Truman evened things up in their half of the inning, SBU scored again in the 4th to regain the lead. Emma Ezzell led off the inning with an infield single and came around to score on a Nicole Horstman single. SBU took a 3-1 lead in the 5th thanks to a leadoff homerun over the left field wall by Katlynn McConville. Another Bearcat run was scored again in the 6th thanks to a sacrifice fly from Renae Gillmore. A big 6th inning by the Bulldogs put them ahead 6-4, which would end up being the final.

Game Two
Rylee Lunn was the game's first baserunner, drawing a walk with one out in the 1st. She stole second to reach scoring position but wouldn't advance any further. TSU had a solid 1st inning, scoring 2 runs to take the lead. Kaitlyn Bagby and Abby Henson picked up singles in the 2nd but nothing would come of the threat. Another 2 runs were scored by the hosts in the bottom of the 2nd, taking a 4-0 lead early on. The Bearcats had runners on first and second with one out in the 6th, but the Bulldogs were able to escape the jam unharmed and went on to win game two by a score of 4-0.

Emma Ezzell led the Bearcat offense, going 3-6 at the plate with a run scored. Emma Wood pitched all 6.0 innings in game two, giving up just 5 hits and 0 earned runs.
