Kirksville, Mo. – The 2021 softball season came to an end Sunday afternoon as the Bearcats competed against the Truman State Bulldogs. The hosts took game one by a score of 6-4 and game two 4-0 to put SBU at 2-40 (1-27 GLVC) for the year.
Game One
The game led off with a
Renae Gillmore single. She was able to advance to second but was stranded there. A couple innings later, she doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a
Katlynn McConville single. The scoreless tie was broken on a
Kaitlyn Bagby single to left, scoring Gillmore. Although Truman evened things up in their half of the inning, SBU scored again in the 4
th to regain the lead.
Emma Ezzell led off the inning with an infield single and came around to score on a
Nicole Horstman single. SBU took a 3-1 lead in the 5
th thanks to a leadoff homerun over the left field wall by
Katlynn McConville. Another Bearcat run was scored again in the 6
th thanks to a sacrifice fly from
Renae Gillmore. A big 6
th inning by the Bulldogs put them ahead 6-4, which would end up being the final.
Game Two
Rylee Lunn was the game's first baserunner, drawing a walk with one out in the 1
st. She stole second to reach scoring position but wouldn't advance any further. TSU had a solid 1
st inning, scoring 2 runs to take the lead.
Kaitlyn Bagby and
Abby Henson picked up singles in the 2
nd but nothing would come of the threat. Another 2 runs were scored by the hosts in the bottom of the 2
nd, taking a 4-0 lead early on. The Bearcats had runners on first and second with one out in the 6
th, but the Bulldogs were able to escape the jam unharmed and went on to win game two by a score of 4-0.
Emma Ezzell led the Bearcat offense, going 3-6 at the plate with a run scored.
Emma Wood pitched all 6.0 innings in game two, giving up just 5 hits and 0 earned runs.
