Springfield, Mo. – The Men's Tennis team hosted their home openers on Friday, but due to the weather the matches were played at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, MO. In the morning match, SBU fell to #20 Midwestern State 6-1 and later fell to Northwest Missouri State 6-0. The #25 ranked Bearcats drop to 5-6 on the season. Despite the scores, the team put up a solid fight, falling in close matches all day.
Match One
Carlos Corser and
Max Sanoja battled hard for a 6-4 win on court 1 in doubles play, but the Mustangs took the other two courts in very tight finishes, giving them a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Adham Gaber helped the Bearcats bounce back with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 victory on court one for his 9
th singles win of the year. The rest of the matches were all very close, but MSU went on to win the remainder of the singles competitions, creating a 6-1 final. Courts 2, 3, and 4 all went to three sets, going down to the wire in the tough loss.
Match Two
Alvaro Nunez and
David Szeri won their match on court 3, defeating their opponents 6-3. Northwest battled back and won on courts 1 and 2 to take the doubles point. On court 1,
Max Sanoja and
Carlos Corser fought hard but fell 7-6.
The green Bearcats went on to win courts 1 and 2 in two sets, making the score 3-0 early on.
Alvaro Nunez won his first set 7-5 and barely lost 7-6 in the second set. His opponent won the third set, giving Northwest their last needed point to win the match. They went on to win courts 4 and 5, with an unfinished match on court 6 to make a 6-0 final.
The team will head to Montgomery, AL for a couple matches against Auburn University Montgomery and the University of West Alabama on Thursday, March 18.
