Nyah Pettus Career Night Not Enough in Bearcats Loss

Box Score Kansas City, Mo- The SBU Women's Basketball team took on divisional opponent of Rockhurst University tonight in the Mason Halpin Field House. After a hard fought game, they fell with a final score of 69-81. That loss puts the Bearcats at 3-4 (1-1 Conference) on the season.

Nyah Pettus opened up the scoring for the Bearcats picking up a quick shooting foul and knocking down both her free throws. A lot of back and forth scoring in the first seven minutes of the game. Back to back three's by Emma Perry helped the Bearcats trail only by one at the first media timeout. Two more threes in the final 3 minutes of the 1st quarter put the Bearcats up 24-19 to end the 1st quarter.

Hawks got out to a quick 7-0 run to start the 2nd quarter making the Bearcats trail 24-26. That run was cut short by Micah Clayton as she made a layup to tie the game at 26. Hawks would go on a 26-9 run throughout the second quarter. Bearcats went into the locker room at half trailing 33-45.

Pettus opens up the scoring in the second half to cut the deficit to 10. Teams would go back in forth trading baskets over the next five minutes. Bearcats would make a basket to cut it to single digits but the Hawks would answer right back. They would cut the deficit down to 8 in the third quarter but ended it trailing 50-62.

Beginning the 4th quarter the Hawks scored the first points to go up by 14. Bearcats would quickly answer back with 3 points to bring the deficit to 11. They would fight all quarter staying in the game trying to complete the comeback. They brought the score to 66-73 with 1:58 to go in the game but were unable to complete the comeback. At the buzzer the final score read 69-81 in the Hawks favor.

As a team, the Bearcats shot 29-53 for 35.8% from the field and 4-14 from the three point line for 28.6%. Pettus lead the scoring for the Bearcats with 25 points for a career high. Her best before that was only 11 points against Lewis University last year. She also had 6 reabounds, 1 assist, and 3 steals. Perry was the next behind her with 11 points going 3-6 from the three point line.

The Bearcats will be back home in Bolivar, Mo this Saturday as they take on the Missouri S&T Miners. The last matchup against them SBU won in overtime by a score of 92-86. Tip off is schedule for 1 PM.
