Bolivar, Mo. - The Bearcats return home for one final competition after scoring 47 against Quincy in last Saturday's road victory. Missouri S&T will come to Bolivar for Saturday's senior day contest.
Scouting The Bearcats
Robert Clardy will be entering his seventh season (2021-22) as the Head Football Coach and his 14th season overall on the Bearcats Football coaching staff. In 2016, Coach Clardy earned GLVC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Bearcats to their first ever conference title and NCAA National Playoff appearance after finishing the season 10-2 (7-1 GLVC). Clardy's Bearcats were ranked as high as 17th in the NCAA Division II AFCA poll, finishing 22nd in the final NCAA Division II AFCA poll, while earning their first ever regional and national rankings. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the 2020-21 football season took place in the spring of 2021. The spring season was a shortened, three game, conference opponents only, season. Truman State visited Bolivar, taking the first game after a very tight first half. SBU nearly defeated Missouri S&T on the road the next week, but fell short late in the game. The final game finished with a high scoring victory over William Jewell.
Southwest Baptist enters Saturday's contest with a 4-6 (3-3 GLVC) record. Texas Permian Basin's strong defense held off the potent Bearcat offense, taking the week one matchup 24-16. Week two saw the Bearcats take on the defending national champions and #1 ranked West Florida on their turf. The Argonauts took the game 63-14. The Oilers of Findlay won a shootout in week three, 62-41. Bouncing back, the Bearcats defeated Lake Erie 28-20 on the road in week four, holding the Storm scoreless in the second half. UINDY won week five, 77-10. SBU responded with a pair of wins, defeating William Jewell 55-10 and upsetting Truman State 27-21 at home. Lindenwood defeated SBU 48-24 on the road, and SBU lost a tight one to McKendree a couple of weeks ago. Responding strong, the Bearcats went to Quincy and brought home a 47- 31 win over the Hawks last week. The spring's GLVC Offensive Player of the Year
Cooper Callis has set several single game records this season, and is honing in on a few single season records. He leads the GLVC in all passing categories, ranks 2nd in the nation in passing yards (3349), 3rd in completions per game (27.3), 4th in completion percentage (69.5), and 8th in passing TD (31).
Preston Carson,
Jordan Kent, and
Cassian Foreman have all been big targets. Carson has the third most receptions per game in the GLVC at 5.8, Kent at 5th (4.8) and Foreman at 7th (4.6). Carson also ranks 3rd in receiving yards per game, Kent is 4th and Foreman is 6th. SBU's group of linebackers is strong, led by upperclassmen in
Aaron Harris,
Taylor Jones-Morgan, and three-time GLVC Defensive Player of the Week,
Coleton Smith. He recorded 20 tackles week one, 19 in week four, and 21 in week seven. He leads the nation with 139 total tackles, 24 more than any other NCAA DII player, and 9 from the SBU single season record.
Aaron Harris has the second most on the team with 54.
Logan Turner has had a near perfect leg this year, going 7-8 on field goals including a 51-yarder, and 37-38 on PAT's.
Scouting The Miners
The Missouri S&T Miners come into Saturday's game with a 5-5 (3-3 GLVC) record this fall. They dropped their first contest by a 34-31 deficit, but bounced back with a 71-0 win over Arkansas Baptist. In their conference opener, the Miners fell 31-28 to Quincy, despite putting up 573 yards of total offense. S&T sneaked by McKendree with a 37-31 win, picking off the Bearcat quarterback late in the fourth to set up the final score. Following that win, S&T upset UINDY 31-28, scoring 17 points in the final frame. Most recently, the Miners fell to Lindenwood 43-16. Luke Hertzler does the quarterbacking for S&T, completing 107-193 passes for 1534 yards, 13 scores, and 8 interceptions. Perhaps the offense's biggest weapon is wide receiver Breon Michel, two-time GLVC Player of the Week. He has caught 60 passes for 1062 yards and 13 touchdowns. Aaron Maya leads the ground game, rushing for 591 yards on 131 carries and 6 touchdowns. On defense, Ben Straatmann leads the team with 79 total tackles, 16.5 of those have been for a loss, and 10.5 have been sacks. The secondary is led by several DBs, especially Cameron Clemons. This year, Clemons has 36 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 15 pass breakups.
SBU leads the all-time series with Missouri S&T 18-11-1. In the spring, S&T took the contest 48-34, but it was a one-score game late in the fourth.
Cooper Callis threw for 299 yards and 3 touchdowns, connecting with
Jordan Kent 8 times for 143 yards and 2 of those scores.
Aaron Harris recorded 10 tackles and 0.5 a sack in that contest.
