Liberty, Mo. – The SBU Football team had a bounce back game against William Jewell Saturday afternoon, defeating the Cardinals by a dominating score of 55-10. The victory helps SBU to a 2-4 (1-1 GLVC) record.
Southwest Baptist won the toss and elected to receive. The offense wasted no time, scoring a touchdown just 2:22 into the game. Putting the Bearcats on the board was
Jordan Kent, catching a 20-yard pass from
Cooper Callis. Later in the first quarter, Callis connected with Kent once again, this time for 37 yards, taking a 15-0 lead after a successful two-point conversion.
The Cardinals answered early in the second quarter, but SBU extended their lead once again on the next drive.
Cooper Callis threw for another touchdown, this throw going to
Eric Knight for 57 yards to put SBU up 22-7. After an unsuccessful Jewell drive,
Cassian Foreman found the end zone on a pass from Callis to take a 29-7 lead. With 55 seconds left in the half,
Logan Turner nailed a 30-yard field goal to make the score 32-7 at halftime.
Continuing where they left off, the Bearcats jumped on the Cardinals early into the third quarter.
Coleton Smith recovered a fumble on 3
rd and 11, setting SBU up deep into WJC territory. The Bearcats weren't able to find the end zone on that drive, but
Logan Turner knocked home a 37-yard field goal to extend the lead. After another stalled Cardinal drive, Callis connected with Kent for his third receiving touchdown of the afternoon, putting SBU ahead 42-7. The Cardinals drove down and put points on the board, but just a field goal. Callis then found a new target,
Isaac Scroggins, for a 7-yard score and a 49-10 lead.
Abel Carter put the final points on the board early in the fourth on a 2-yard touchdown rush.
Cooper Callis had another outstanding game, breaking the SBU single game passing yards record with 512 yards through the air. The previous record was held at 479. He also tied his record for single game passing touchdowns with 6. His 35 completions ranks 5
th in a single game in SBU history as well. Former high school teammate
Jordan Kent was on the receiving end of 3 of those scores, catching 5 passes for 129 yards. Those 3 receiving touchdowns ranks 2
nd in SBU single game history.
Eric Knight led the rushing attack, picking up 28 yards on 6 carries. The defensive side of the ball was led again by
Coleton Smith. He collected 9 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 quarterback hit, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.
Nate Stelken also had a sack, and
Omari Oggs had the team's lone interception early in the second quarter.
The team returns home to face the Bulldogs of Truman State next Saturday, October 16 with kickoff set for 1 PM at Plaster Stadium.
