St. Charles, Mo. – The SBU Football team was back on the road Saturday afternoon, taking on the Lindenwood Lions. After taking an early lead, the hosts battled back and took the contest 48-24. With the loss, SBU falls to 3-5 (2-2 GLVC) on the year.
SBU won the toss and elected to receive the ball. They were faced with a 3
rd and 4 on the LWU 47-yard line when
Cooper Callis connected with
Preston Carson for the first score of the game. On the first Lions drive, Lindenwood moved the ball down to the SBU 16, where they attempted a field goal.
Omari Oggs was able to get a hand on it, keeping the score at 7-0. Following an SBU interception, Lindenwood had another attempt at a field goal, this one good. The Bearcats picked up their groove once again, driving the field for another score. Callis found
Cassian Foreman who made a tip-toe snag in the end zone to extend their lead to 14-3.
The second quarter opened with a Lindenwood score, bringing them within 4 points. A fumble recovered by
Chance Deitz set SBU up on the LWU 13, but the Bearcats settled for a field goal, 17-10. The hosts scored on their next drive to even the score, took a punt return to the house, and returning an interception for a touchdown, putting the Lions ahead 31-17. They scored once again right before the break, taking a 38-17 lead into halftime.
On the opening possession of the second half, the Lions drove the field and score once again, 45-17.
Abel Carter found the end zone midway through the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to 24-45. Lindenwood kicked one last field goal, making the final score 48-24 in favor of the hosts.
Cooper Callis completed 32-45 passes for 274 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Preston Carson had 101 of those yards on 8 catches,
Jarrett Massie with the game-high 12 receptions for 80 yards.
Abel Carter was the leading rusher for SBU, finishing with 58 yards on 21 carries and a score.
Coleton Smith's 8 tackles led the team, 1.5 of those went down as a loss.
The team will be back home next Saturday, taking on the Bearcats of McKendree on October 30 at 1 PM.
