Bolivar, Mo. - The Bearcats return home after a bounce back win over Lake Erie College on the road. Saturday's game marks the week of conference play and will be homecoming for SBU.
Scouting The Bearcats
Robert Clardy will be entering his seventh season (2021-22) as the Head Football Coach and his 14th season overall on the Bearcats Football coaching staff. In 2016, Coach Clardy earned GLVC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Bearcats to their first ever conference title and NCAA National Playoff appearance after finishing the season 10-2 (7-1 GLVC). Clardy's Bearcats were ranked as high as 17th in the NCAA Division II AFCA poll, finishing 22nd in the final NCAA Division II AFCA poll, while earning their first ever regional and national rankings. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the 2020-21 football season took place in the spring of 2021. The spring season was a shortened, three game, conference opponents only, season. Truman State visited Bolivar, taking the first game after a very tight first half. SBU nearly defeated Missouri S&T on the road the next week, but fell short late in the game. The final game finished with a high scoring victory over William Jewell.
The fall 2021 season began a week earlier than expected for the Bearcats, scheduling a home contest last minute against Texas Permian Basin. The Falcons' strong defense held off the potent Bearcat offense, taking the week one matchup 24-16. Week two saw the Bearcats take on the defending national champions and #1 ranked West Florida on their turf. The Argonauts took the game 63-14. The Oilers of Findlay won a shootout in week three, 62-41. Bouncing back, the Bearcats defeated Lake Erie 28-20 on the road in week four, holding the Storm scoreless in the second half. The spring's GLVC Offensive Player of the Year,
Cooper Callis, returns to lead the SBU offense. In just the past two weeks, Callis has completed 53-75 passes for 730 yards, 9 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. He leads the GLVC in all passing categories.
Preston Carson,
Jordan Kent, and
Cassian Foreman have all been big targets. Carson leads the conference in receptions per game with Kent not far behind. Carson also ranks 3rd in receiving yards per game, Foreman and Kent are 5th and 6th.
Eric Knight,
Bryce Cabrera, and
Abel Carter will all take reps at running back. SBU's group of linebackers is strong, led by upperclassmen in
Aaron Harris,
Taylor Jones-Morgan, and two-time GLVC Defensive Player of the Week,
Coleton Smith. Week one saw Smith with 20 tackles, and Smith recorded 19 tackles last week. He leads the team with 65 total tackles, 21 more than any other in the GLVC.
Brenden Smith has the second most takles on the team with 26.
Scouting The Greyhounds
The Indianapolis Greyhounds enter Saturday's game with a 2-2 record on the year. They began the year ranked #15 in the D2CCA poll, but have fallen out of the top 25 after dropping their last two. Those last three games have all been decided by four points or less. In week three, the Greyhounds lost to #15 ranked Tiffin, 20-17, and fell last week to Ohio Dominican in double overtime. Chris Keevers enters his third season with the Greyhounds. In 2019, Keevers led the team to a 9-1 finish and an NCAA DII Playoff appearance. He also led the team to a 3-0 spring season. UINDY is balanced on offense, rushing for 170.5 yards and throwing for 207.0 yards each game. Bryce Stancombe does the quarterbacking. He is 77-130 for 828 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 1 int. Alonzo Derrick does most of the receiving, hauling in 15 passes for 263 yards and 3 scores. In the RB 1 spot, Toriano Clinton has rushed 116 times for 574 yards and 8 touchdowns- a GLVC high. The Greyhounds have been dominate on defense, holding opponents to 20 points and 332.5 yards per contest. Kiave Guerrier is the team leader with 34 tackles, 5.0 for loss, and 1 forced fumble. Kyle Borske is the team's best pass rusher, collecting 5.0 sacks and an additional 2 quarterback hits on the year so far. In the secondary, two Greyhounds have 6 pass break-ups: Loren Strickland and Kaysus Kurns.
SBU trails the all-time series with UINDY 5-1. The past three matchups were won by the Greyhounds in a solid fashion, but 2016 was a 41-37 victory for SBU and 2015 was a neck and neck 26-24 edge by UINDY.
