Bearcats Complete Comeback, Winning Fourth Straight

Bolivar, Mo. – In a mid-week matchup featuring SBU and the Greyhounds of Indianapolis, the Bearcats made a major comeback to pull out their fourth straight win. They improve to 5-1 (5-1 GLVC) on the season.

UINDY began the game with a three-point play. Brady Smith and Quinn Nelson followed with back-to-back field goals to take their first lead of the game. The teams battled for a majority of the first 10 minutes, extremely tight defense coming from both sides. Joe Miller scored a layup with 21 seconds left, but the Greyhounds hit a buzzer beater to take a 35-27 lead at the half.

Five free throws from Quinn Nelson trimmed the UINDY lead down to 3 early in the second half, but the visitors quickly stretched it to 11 just a few possessions later. Another comeback bid was started by SBU, but again the lead was pushed to 11 by UINDY. With 10:19 on the clock, the Bearcats began eating away at the 51-40 deficit. Quinn Nelson hit a jumper and Brady Smith successfully completed a three-point play to begin the comeback. After a Greyhound score, Nico Aguirre hit a big three and was fouled, allowing the completion of the rare four-point play. Quinn Nelson then hit a three of his own, cutting the deficit to just 1 with 5:11 to go. A jumper from Ricky Crawford Jr. gave SBU the lead back with 4:14 left and they wouldn't surrender it again. The Greyhounds trimmed the lead down to 1 with 1:35 on the clock, but Nico Aguirre found Ricky Crawford Jr. for the huge three to put the Bearcats up 4. SBU forced a turnover on defense and Mitch Ganote sealed the game with a jumper, finishing the game with a final score of 64-58.

Quinn Nelson led the team in scoring, dropping 16 points on the night. Brady Smith was the other Bearcat in double digits, scoring 11 points. He also had 6 rebounds and 3 assists. SBU out-rebounded UINDY 35-26 in the victory, and outscored the Greyhounds 37-23  in the second half.

The Bearcats conclude this home stretch with a game on Saturday, January 9 at 3 PM against William Jewell. SBU visited Liberty, MO earlier this season, defeating the Cardinals 89-71.
