Indianapolis, Ind. - Southwest Baptist (14-3, 7-2 GLVC) looks to stay hot after upsetting #1 ranked Bellarmine and topping rival Drury this week.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
The Bearcats are rolling right now, upsetting #1 Bellarmine Thursday evening and beating the Drury Panthers 82-74 Monday night. SBU has now won 4 straight, and 5 straight road games.
Quinn Nelson was named GLVC Player of the Week last week, SBU's second this season alongside
Damian Prgomet. The team currently ranks 2nd in the conference in three point field goal percentage at .393, and 3rd in field goal percentage at .487.
In their most recent competition, SBU upset the #1 team in the nation in Bellarmine, 79-74. The Knights suffered their first loss on Monday to UIndy, but the team had not lost back-to-back games in Davenport's 15 seasons there.
Quinn Nelson dropped 26 points with 6 three's and 4 rebounds. Three other Bearcats hit double-digit scoring as well in the team's 55.1% shooting performance.
The Bearcats come into the 2019-20 season following an appearance in the MIAA Tournament last season. Finishing with a 13-15 (7-12 MIAA) regular season record, the Bearcats received the #10 seed in the conference tournament. In the first round, SBU edged out #7 Lindenwood 76-75, becoming the first #10 seed to win a game in the MIAAÂ Tournament and picking up their first conference tournament win since 2006. Washburn put an end to SBU's run in the second round with a 77-58 final score. The Bearcats are now full-time member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference which consists of 16 teams. Lindenwood is also making the move from the MIAAÂ to the GLVC. Three starters return for SBU,
Godfrey Rolle,
Damian Prgomet, and
Quinn Nelson. In addition to those three starters,
Tyler Williams and
Lucas Brueggemann also return from last year's roster. This year's roster consists of 16 total players, 11 of those being new faces. The breakdown of the roster is 2 seniors, 5 juniors, 4 sophomores, and 5 freshmen.Â
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
The Indianapolis Greyhounds (Indianapolis, IN) come into Saturday's game hot, beating #1 and then unbeaten Bellarmine on Monday, followed by a 39-point victory over Drury on Thursday. They are 13-4 (5-4 GLVC) this season, having received multiple national rankings. In last week's polls they received votes. Their conference losses consist of Illinois Springfield, McKendree, Missouri-St. Louis, and Bellarmine (December 3). The Greyhounds have five players averaging double-digit points, with Trevor Lakes leading at 15.0. Lakes also leads the team in rebounding with 6.0 per game, and has 10 blocks this season.
THE COACHES
SBU head coach
Clark Sheehy begins his sixth season on the SBU bench after compiling a 62-83 (32-66 MIAA) record while at SBU. Coach Sheehy holds a career coaching record of 244-189 across fourteen seasons while coaching six different All-Americans and over 40 athletes that have moved on to play professional basketball.
Stan Gouard returns as the head coach for Indianapolis for his 12th season. From 2010-16, Gouard led the Greyhounds to six consecutive NCAA Tounament appearances, including a #1 national ranking in 2014-15 and 2013-14 GLVC Coach of the Year. Gouard played for Southern Indiana, and served as an assistant coach there as well. Last year, Gouard led UIndy to a 19-10 (12-6 GLVC) record, falling to Drury in the first round of the GLVC Tournament.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The series between these teams is tied at 1-1, with the last meeting taking place in the 1989-90 season. SBU won that game, 93-73.
