Indianapolis, Ind. – The Bearcats began their conference play on Saturday, visiting the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds. In the latest national rankings, UIndy was ranked #12 and #10 in the two polls. The Greyhounds defeated the Bearcats in the matchup Saturday evening, 49-6. The Bearcats are now even at 2-2 (0-1 GLVC).
SBU received the ball to begin the game, but was forced to punt after three plays. UIndy scored after their first three plays to pull ahead 7-0. The Bearcats managed to pick up a first down on their next drive but it came to a halt shortly after. Another three play scoring drive gave the Greyhounds an early 14-0 lead. With 3:28 left in the 1
st, SBU moved the ball 32 yards, but was forced to punt again. On that drive,
Eric Knight rushed for 17 yards and
Dylan Mountain connected with a couple receivers.
The Greyhounds opened the 2
nd quarter with another score, taking a 21-0 lead. However, on Indy's next drive, the Bearcats forced the Greyhounds to a three-and-out. Later in the quarter, the Greyhounds had defensive scores on back-to-back drives, taking a 42-0 lead at halftime.
After an 82-yard kick return, Indianapolis set up shop on SBU's 15 for their first possession of the 3
rd quarter. They scored on the next play, giving them a 49-0 lead. The Bearcats had a drive going late in the 3
rd, but they were unable to score which forced a punt.
With 8:04 left in the game, SBU got the ball and began a drive starting on their own 24. On a 3
rd and 5,
Brenden Smith connected with
Curtis Cuillard for 7 yards to keep the drive alive. A couple plays later, Smith hit
Raldy Mena for a 24-yard gain, setting SBU up on the Indy 35. A pass interference call helped inch SBU closer to Indy's goal line, where
Brenden Smith would later run the ball in for an SBU touchdown. That would conclude the scoring, creating a final of 49-6 in favor of Indianapolis.
Brenden Smith completed 6 passes on 11 attempts, throwing for 62 yards. Smith also led the team in rushing, collecting 53 yards on 13 attempts and a touchdown.
Raldy Mena led the receiving category, catching 6 passes for 69 yards.
On defense,
Darius Powe led the team with 6 total tackles and a forced fumble.
Coleton Smith also had a sack and 2 tackles for a loss.
The Bearcats continue their road trip next week against Truman State. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 PM in Kirksville, Missouri.
