Joplin, Mo. – The Bearcats traveled to Missouri Southern for a doubleheader against the Lions Wednesday afternoon. MSSU took game one 8-0 and game two 2-0. With the loss, SBU falls to 3-26 (0-4 MIAA).
Game One
In the first inning,
Yezzania Gonzalez drew a one out walk, followed by a
Megan Schellert single. However, two strikeouts put the offensive threat to an end. Missouri Southern scored early, plating one run in the 1
st.
Sara Spencer singled to right field in the 2
nd inning, but nothing more would come from the offense. The Lions scored another in the 3
rd, boosting their score to 2-0.
In the 5
th inning,
Kori Hillenburg took four balls to reach base with two outs.
Paige St. Pierre was next in the lineup, driving the ball to left center and advancing Hillenburg into scoring position. MSSU stopped the threat, getting the third out before any runs were scored. The game broke open in the 5
th inning as the Lions scored 3 more, making the score 5-0.
Megan Schellert singled to lead off the 6
th. Two outs later,
Lauren Strobel reached on an infield single, but a fielder's choice ended the inning. Missouri Southern ended the game in the 6
th inning, scoring 3 more runs and ending the game due to the run rule, 8-0.
Megan Schellert was the offensive leader for SBU, going 2-3 at the plate in game one.
Game Two
Similar to game one, the Lions scored one in the first inning to jump ahead 1-0 early in the game. After two quick outs in the 2
nd,
Lauren Strobel kept the inning alive, reaching on an error.
Sara Spencer then walked to put runners on first and second, but a fielder's choice ended the threat.
In the 4
th inning,
Lauren Strobel hit a two out single through the left side.
Sara Spencer also reached base, getting hit by a pitch. The bases became loaded after
Nicole Horstman drew a walk, but MSSU got the third out before any SBU base runners crossed the plate. The Lions scored their second run in the 5
th inning, taking a 2-0 lead. The Bearcats tried to get some offense going in the final frame as
Nicole Horstman hit a one out single, but that was all SBU would get, ending with a final score of 2-0.
Kaylee Schmidli pitched all 6.0 innings, surrendering 2 runs on just 5 hits.
The Bearcats return home from their 8 game road trip, hosting Emporia State on Friday, April 5 at 2 PM.
