Schwettmann Goes 3-5 in Loss to Missouri S&T

Bolivar, Mo. – SBU competed against Missouri S&T for the second time this season, this game going down as a home competition for the Bearcats. Earlier in the year, S&T won 7-1 and the Miners claimed a 9-4 victory Wednesday afternoon. The loss brings SBU to 16-26 (8-19 MIAA).

The first inning was quick for the Miners as Drew Wagner retired the batters in order to begin the game. Carl Schwettmann picked up a single in the first inning, but a double play retired the first three Bearcats in order as well. Missouri S&T struck first, scoring 3 runs in the 2nd inning. In the bottom of the 4th, Hunter Hisky smacked a double to left field to lead off the inning. Sam Avila then reached on a walk, bringing up Jackson Soule who singled up the middle to score Hisky from second. Both Avila and Soule advanced on a balk before Tyler Mathys walked to load the bases. The second run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly from Noah Tucker, bringing the score to 3-2 Miners.

Missouri S&T scored again in the 5th, boosting their lead to 4-2. Carl Schwettmann doubled to lead off the bottom of the 5th and later stole third, but wouldn't come around to score. The Miners struck again in the 6th and again in the 7th, making the score 7-2. Carl Schwettmann continued his big day at the plate, leading off the 7th with a home run to left field, cutting the lead to 7-3. The Miners got that run back in the 8th, 8-3. Blake Hobbs came to the plate with two on in the bottom of the 8th, driving a single to center field that scored a run. S&T scored once more before the end of the game, creating a 9-4 final score.

Carl Schwettmann led the Bearcats offensively, going 3-5 with a double and a home run. The other 5 hits were divided amongst as many batters.

The Bearcats hit the road in their next competition, heading to Missouri Western for a weekend series starting on Friday, April 26 with game time set for 7 PM.
