Kansas City, Mo. – The Bearcats were able to advance past the first round of the MIAA tournament in their final year in the MIAA, but the #2 seeded Washburn Ichabods put an end to the SBU run Thursday -afternoon. In the second game of the afternoon Washburn defeated Southwest Baptist 77-58. The loss puts and end to SBU's season, ending their time in the MIAA.
The first half was a defensive stalemate between the teams.
Maris Colton scored the first basket in the game off an assist by
Chris Rossow. The Ichabods responded 12 seconds later with their first score to even things up. It was Colton scoring again, making a couple free throws. With a little over 4 minutes into the game, Washburn pulled ahead 8-4. Responding to the Ichabod score was
Damian Prgomet, bringing the Bearcats within 2. Halfway through the first half, the Ichabods led the Bearcats 16-10.
They quickly stretched their lead to 12, appearing to run away with the game. However, the Bearcats roared back.
Chris Rossow jump started the SBU offense, scoring a jumper with 8:20 to go.
Karim Mouliom and
Damian Prgomet followed, cutting the Ichabod lead in half. With 4:38 reading on the clock,
Maris Colton drilled a three, making the score 20-24 in favor of Washburn.
Godfrey Rolle made a layup with 3:50 left in the half, and Washburn responded, but the Ichabods would remain scoreless for the rest of the half. It was Mouliom again scoring with 2:26 to go, bringing SBU within two. Both teams played solid defense the rest of the half, but SBU was able to score with one second on the clock, tying the score at 26 each heading into the half.
Washburn came out of the break extremely hot, scoring 6 in a little over a minute.
Godfrey Rolle made a layup to break up the run, but the Ichabods didn't seem phased. Following a Washburn score, Rolle completed a three-point play, making the score 31-36. The #2 seed responded quickly with two free throws and a jumper to build their lead to 9. A minute later,
Damian Prgomet and
Karim Mouliom scored on back to back SBU possessions, but Washburn had a response each time. At the 10:00 mark in the second half, Washburn built their lead to 15.
Chris Rossow scored the next 4 for the Bearcats, making a layup and two free throws.
Karim Mouliom followed Rossow's scoring efforts, making a layup of his own and bringing SBU within 15 once again. The Bearcats kept chipping away at the Ichabod lead. With 5:56 to go,
Quinn Nelson scored a layup and
Karim Mouliom hit a three to cut the lead to 11. Washburn converted on an and-one play, but
Adnan Jahic nailed a three to get those points back. The Ichabods kept their foot on the gas, controlling a double-digit lead the remainder of the game, finishing 58-77.
Karim Mouliom led SBU in his final game as a Bearcat, scoring 15 points and grabbing 7 rebounds, along with 2 blocks.
Godfrey Rolle,
Maris Colton, and
Damian Prgomet each finished with double digits as well.
Chris Rossow added 7 assists and
Quinn Nelson made 3 steals in the loss.
