Springfield, Mo. – The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame recognized SBU's JoAnn Harrison with their Wynn Award on Wednesday morning. The award is named after Dr. Mary Jo Wynn who was considered to be the pioneer of women's athletics at Missouri State University. The selection committee found that JoAnn Harrison fit the profile extremely well, stating "(Harrison) is the pioneer of three women's sports programs at SBU – softball, volleyball, and basketball."
JoAnn Harrison was inducted into the Southwest Baptist University Hall of Fame in 2001, receiving induction for her accomplishments in basketball, softball, and volleyball. She coached the women's basketball team in 1967-68 as SBU's first head coach for the program, and also coached in 1972-73. In those two years, Harrison led the Bearcats to 2
nd and 5
th in state. Harrison was the first SBU Softball coach as well, coaching the team for 18 years and collecting a 255-161 record. Her 255 wins marks the most SBU victories by an SBU Softball coach. She was also the first SBU Volleyball coach, beginning in 1965. Her volleyball record sits at 314-235-4, giving her a .571 winning percentage. Harrison led the volleyball team to 13 consecutive winning seasons from 1966-78, including a 38-8-1 record in 1974 which remains a school record.
