Claremore, Okla. – The Bearcats continued their series with Rogers State Saturday afternoon. After the Hillcats won in Bolivar on Tuesday, the teams split Saturday; SBU winning game one 2-0, and the Hillcats taking game two 3-2. The Bearcats remain .500 on the year with a 3-3 record.
Game 1
Dalton Morrow started on the mound and he had an incredible day. In the 7 inning game, Morrow threw a no-hitter; first in SBU history. Of the 24 batters he faced, only three reached base on two walks and an error, striking out seven.
The Bearcats struck early, loading the bases with two outs. Sam Avila then took four balls, getting credit with an RBI and giving SBU a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning,
Blake Hobbs singled to lead things off.
Jackson Soule moved Hobbs to second on a sacrifice bunt, but SBU couldn't plate any runs, keeping the score 1-0.
Southwest Baptist scored their second run in the sixth.
Tyler Mathys hit a single to left field, moving to second on a sac bunt. He later came around to score on a fielding error by the third baseman. The Hillcats were unable to mount any offense thanks to Morrow's stellar pitching and solid defense, giving them a 2-0 win.
Of the 5 SBU hits,
Brett Mitchell was responsible for two of those, and the other three belonged to
Blake Hobbs,
Tyler Mathys, and
Caleb Sneed.
Game 2
The Bearcats continued their solid pitching performance, but Rogers State was able to score 3, giving them the win over SBU.
Drew Wagner got the start and went 3.2 innings, giving up just 2 hits and no runs. SBU struck early again, this time in the second inning.
Tyler Mathys led off with a double down the left field line, followed by a sac bunt and a sac fly to score him. The Hillcats led off their half of the second with a walk, but a fly out and a double play quickly put the momentum to rest.
In the bottom of the 5
th inning, RSU generated some offense and scored a run on a bases loaded walk. The Bearcats responded quickly, scoring another in the next inning. With two outs,
Blake Lutgen walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Then,
Hunter Hisky picked up his first hit and RBI of the year off a double to right field, giving SBU a 2-1 lead. Rogers State scored their other two runs in the bottom of the 6
th, both coming from sacrifice flies.
Carl Schwettmann singled to lead off the 9
th inning, but was called out at second on a fielder's choice. The Bearcats were unable to score another run, leading to a final score of 3-2.
Hunter Hisky, Carl Schwettmann,
Tyler Mathys, and
Blake Hobbs each collected a hit in the loss.
The Bearcats return home for a series against Maryville on February 16
th and 17
th.
