Bolivar, Mo. – The Bearcats hosted the Rogers State Hillcats in a game that was originally scheduled for Saturday. RSU defeated SBU 16-9, moving SBU's record to 2-2 (0-0 MIAA) on the year.
The Hillcats were able to get runners on first and third to begin the game, but SBU got out of the jam thanks to a double play. It didn't take long for the Bearcats to take the lead. On just the second pitch of the bottom of the first,
Caleb Sneed blasted a home run to left center. Schwettmann later doubled in the inning, but he was unable to score before the end of the inning.
Again, the Hillcats put the pressure on, loading the bases with one out in the second, but a strikeout and a ground ball to the pitcher allowed SBU to end the inning unharmed. Similar to the first inning, SBU launched another home run. This one being a two-run home run from
Trevor Lofstrom, giving the Bearcats a 3-0 lead. The bottom of the third was a familiar sight. Carl Schwettmann hit SBU's third home run in three innings to take a 5-0 lead.
Rogers State quickly evened things up in the top of the fourth, scoring 5 runs. In the bottom of the fourth,
Blake Hobbs led off with a double.
Trevor Lofstrom singled to right, moving Hobbs to third. Although SBU got caught in a double play in the next at bat, Hobbs was still able to score, regaining the lead. RSU scored another 3 runs in the 5
th to go up 8-6. With one out in the bottom of the 5
th, the Bearcats loaded the bases. A balk by the pitcher allowed all runners to move up a base, scoring a run for SBU. Following the balk, Sam Avila drove in two with a single to center field, 9-8 Bearcats.
In the 6
th, the Hillcats took the lead for what would be the remainder of the game, 10-9 RSU. The 7
th was quiet for both teams. Rogers State plated 6 more in the 8
th, pushing their lead to 16-9, which would be the final score.
Tyler Mathys, Carl Schwettmann, Sam Avila,
Blake Hobbs, and
Trevor Lofstrom each collected two hits on the day.
The Bearcats will play against Rogers State again this weekend at Claremore, OK. Times for the games are yet to be decided.
