Bolivar, Mo. – The Bearcats wrapped up their series with the Saints Thursday afternoon. SBU defeated Maryville twice on Thursday, 19-4 in game one, and 8-5 in game two. The Bearcats improve to 5-4 (0-0 MIAA) this season.
Game One
Drew Wagner got the nod for the start. He gave up a hit in the first inning, but forced a double play to get out of the inning unharmed. The Bearcats had a rock solid first inning. The first four Bearcats got on with hits to begin the game. Carl Schwettmann hit a triple to the wall, clearing the loaded bases to give SBU a 3-0 lead. He later scored on a passed ball.
Brett Mitchell drove in another run on a sacrifice fly, and
Luke Winfrey singled home
Tyler Mathys, giving SBU a 6-0 lead at the end of one.
Maryville got on the scoreboard in the third, 6-1 SBU still with the lead. The Bearcats responded in the third, scoring 3 more runs.

Caleb Sneed, and
Hunter Hisky scored on a wild pitch. The Saints plated two more in the 5
th, but SBU responded in a loud manner. A wild pitch with the bases loaded brought home one run. Carl Schwettmann then hit a three run bomb, and two batters later,
Blake Lutgen also hit one out, scoring
Blake Hobbs as well.
Tyler Mathys followed with a triple, and
Brett Mitchell drove him in on a double.
Caleb Sneed later doubled, scoring
Brett Mitchell. At the end of the 5
th, the Bearcats had a commanding 17-3 lead.
The Saints scored another in the 6
th, but again, SBU scored twice more. Carl Schwettmann hit another home run, this one a solo shot. A few batters later,
Noah Tucker pinch hit and drove in
Blake Hobbs with a single through the left side.
David Tongue relieved Wagner in the 7
th, retiring the batters in order to secure the run-rule win, 19-4.
Wagner went 6.0 innings, giving up 4 runs on just 5 hits and striking out 7 in the win.
Caleb Sneed,
Hunter Hisky, and Carl Schwettmann each picked up three hits. Schwettmann recorded 7 RBIs, tied for fourth most in a game in SBU history. Each Bearcat in the starting lineup recorded a hit.
Game Two
Dalton Morrow got his first start after his no-hitter against Rogers State. The first batter of the game reached on a hit, but Morrow remained unphased, pitching very well.
Caleb Sneed and
Hunter Hisky began game two in a similar fashion to game one, both reaching on back to back hits. They would be stranded on base as the inning came to an end. The Saints struck first, scoring on a homerun in the 2
nd.
Blake Lutgen responded with a homerun of his own to tie things up at 1.
In the fourth inning, Maryville scored another run, taking a 2-1 lead.
Luke Winfrey led off the 5
th inning with a homerun, tying the game at 2-2. SBU was able to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 6
th, scoring
Tyler Mathys on a
Caleb Sneed single. In the top of the 8
th, Maryville hit two solo homeruns to take a 4-3 lead.
The Bearcats responded with a barrage of offense in the bottom of the 8
th. SBU loaded the bases with one out, then scored a run on a wild pitch. The Saints intentionally walked
Caleb Sneed to load the bases, bringing
Hunter Hisky to the plate. Hisky made them pay, singling through the right side to score
Tyler Mathys. Another run scored due to a wild pitch, then
Jackson Soule smashed a double that almost left the yard to give SBU an 8-4 lead heading into the 9
th. The Saints scored one run, but SBU shut them down before more damage was done, winning by a score of 8-5.
Dalton Morrow went 7.0 innings, giving up just 2 runs on 4 hits and striking out 9 batters.
Caleb Sneed continued his excellent offensive day, picking up two more hits, an RBI, and two walks.
Hunter Hisky,
Jackson Soule, and
Tyler Mathys all recorded two hits as well.
The Bearcats hit the road for their next competition, beginning MIAA Conference play with Pittsburg State on February 22 at 3 PM.
