Bolivar, Mo. – Lincoln University of Missouri Blue Tigers visited Bolivar Saturday afternoon. The SBU Women's Basketball team came back and defeated the Blue Tigers in the last seconds, improving their record to 6-11 (2-6 MIAA) on the season.
SBU's first 9 points came from three pointers.
Bailey Rezabek scored the first points of the game, followed by two three's from
RayShee Smith. The Blue Tigers answered with points of their own, claiming a lead with 5:17 left in the first and not surrendering the lead until late in the game. Lincoln stretched their lead to 10 points with 1:10 remaining in the first, but
Madison Strong made a three pointer on SBU's next possession to cut the Blue Tiger lead to 7 before the quarter ended.
Lincoln came out of the break with a score, but the Bearcats kept scoring as well. A little over two minutes into the second,
Laura Vierkant and
RayShee Smith made three pointers to cut the Lincoln lead down to 31-28. The Bearcats kept up with the Blue Tigers, maintaining a difference of around 4 points. With 2:07 to go in the half, SBU cut the lead down to 2 thanks to a
Laura Vierkant layup. However, Lincoln was able to stretch their lead back to 6 going into halftime, 42-36.
The Blue Tigers scored a layup to begin the second half, and
Laura Vierkant made a free throw early on, but neither team would score again until the clock read 5:40, when the Blue Tigers scored a layup. Lincoln quickly pushed their lead to 11 with 4:32 to go, but the Bearcats roared back.
Bailey Rezabek scored a layup on their next possession, followed by a
Caylee Richardson layup. The Blue Tigers did score a layup, but a three pointer from Vierkant, two
Madison Strong free throws, and a
RayShee Smith three pointer cut Lincoln's lead to just one going into the fourth.
The visitors made two quick jumpers to begin the fourth, giving them a five point lead. The teams battled back and forth, each making the most of their possessions with buckets. With 3:15 left in the game, Lincoln had a 9 point lead, but again, the Bearcats weren't finished.
Caylee Richardson scored a layup to begin the rally.
RayShee Smith and
Morgan Henderson followed with huge three pointers, bringing the Bearcats within one. Lincoln scored a layup, but
RayShee Smith nailed another jumper. After a timeout to discuss defensive strategies, the Blue Tigers bobbled the ball and turned the ball over with just 36 seconds to go. As the clock ticked down to 13 seconds,
Bailey Rezabek made a shot off the glass to regain the lead, 68-67. The Blue Tigers tried to come up with a play, but the ball was poked loose and rolled around on the floor long enough for time to expire, giving SBU a 68-67 comeback win.
RayShee Smith scored 18 point in the win, and also gathered 6 assists.
Bailey Rezabek had 12 points, including the game-winner.
Laura Vierkant added 11 points, and
Caylee Richardson scored a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bearcats will begin a three game road trip, starting with Central Missouri on January 26 at 1:30 PM.
